Girls fall to RCC, look forward to Sundance

The Hill City Girls High School volleyball team fell to 18-6 on the season with a loss to Rapid City Christian Sept. 28.
The Rangers won set one 25-20 then lost three straight, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-20.
“We came out with great energy and determination in the first set against RCC, and I think they were a little taken aback. The remaining sets were close but when playing a strong team like RCC, every point matters,” said head coach Allie Henderson.

Offense MIA in homecoming loss

On the Custer High School football team’s first play from scrimmage last Friday evening, Tyrin Scott took a handoff from quarterback Roland Sedlacek and raced around the right end, picking up 40 yards before being dragged down by a Vermillion defender.
Offensively, it was Custer’s biggest highlight of the game.
In fact, it was its only highlight.
The Wildcats picked up only 20 more yards the entirety of the game as a valiant defensive effort was spoiled by a nonexistent offense in a 14-0 loss to the Tanagers on Custer’s homecoming night.

Golfers quality for state meet

The Custer High School golf team is state bound after placing in the top three at the Region 4A golf meet Monday at Boulder Canyon Country Club outside of Sturgis.
The Wildcats placed third as a team with 351 strokes. The top three teams from the region automatically qualify for the state meet next week. St. Thomas More won the region title with a score of 348 and also took medalist honors with Vincent VanLiere’s 71.

Soccer team headed for playoff spot

Only two years after the program returned, the Custer High School soccer team is almost assuredly back in the playoffs.
The Wildcats, 3-5-3, currently sit in the seventh seed in Class A soccer, and although some games remain for teams above and below the Wildcats, the team will likely be the seventh or eighth seed in the playoffs when they begin next week.

Volleyball team fourth in Belle Fourche

The Custer High School volleyball team had a another busy week beginning with a win by forfeit over Pine Ridge last Tuesday.
Then on Thursday, they endured a loss in three sets to Spearfish (25-11, 25-17, 25-22).
“We definitely got stronger throughout the match. The girls did a nice job reading their offense and communicating this on the court,” said head coach Jill Hohn. “This really helped in the later sets. Our ability to adjust was a positive for us.  We had some great volleys and our coverage looked good.”

Cross county makes strides in Hot Springs

A smaller squad of Custer High School cross country Wildact runners competed in the Dave Scott Invitational in Hot Springs last Tuesday.
There was one varsity boys runner, Dylan Frank competing in the meet. Frank earned 13th place to get a medal at the meet. He ran a time of 21:27.74
In the girls JV race, Mattea Marshall was the first place runner, crossing the finish line with a time of 25:40.27.
Then, a string of other Wildcats followed behind her to earn the thrid through sixth place spots.

Cheer team adds new members, new stunts

The Custer High School competitive cheer team has continued to develop their routine through the season, trying to pack as much in as possible with a smaller than ideal squad. Now, though, the team has added two new members to the team, which will help them to get more stunts in their routine and maximize their opportunity to score points in competition.
The team competed in the competition in Douglas Saturday, Sept. 16 and earned fifth place. Then, this past Saturday, they competed in the Raider Invite at Stevens High School in Rapid City, earning eighth place out of 11 teams.

Rupert wins Rapid City meet

In the middle of the homecoming parade, the Hill City High School cross country team showed its Ranger pride by competing at the Rapid City Area Schools Invitational Cross Country Meet. 
“Both the girls and the boys looked a little tired this week which is pretty normal for where we’re at in our training cycle,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “We’re training for the state meet not the Rapid Invite.”
Even so, with 139 other boys competing, Luke Rupert won the varsity 5K with a time of 15:35.56. 

Rangers defeat Miller

The Hill City Rangers Football team is having a winning season, standing at 3-2 after a decisive win against Miller-Highmore-Harrold. The Rangers defeated Miller by a score of 44-12.

Rangers fifth at Black Hills Conference meet

With no time to practice, four members of the Hill City Rangers golf team played in the Black Hills Conference Championship Sept. 19 at Hart Ranch outside of Rapid City. 
This tournament is outside of the Rangers’ normal season, but they are allowed to play as a Black Hills Conference school. 
“It was good to get out there and compete. It’s always fun to compete against the bigger schools,” said coach Josh Daiss.
