The Hill City Rangers Football team is having a winning season, standing at 3-2 after a decisive win against Miller-Highmore-Harrold. The Rangers defeated Miller by a score of 44-12.

Rangers fifth at Black Hills Conference meet

With no time to practice, four members of the Hill City Rangers golf team played in the Black Hills Conference Championship Sept. 19 at Hart Ranch outside of Rapid City. 
This tournament is outside of the Rangers’ normal season, but they are allowed to play as a Black Hills Conference school. 
“It was good to get out there and compete. It’s always fun to compete against the bigger schools,” said coach Josh Daiss. 

Girls win invitational

The Hill City High School volleyball team is the Belle Fourche Invitational champion.
The girls defeated Lead-Deadwood, New Underwood and Belle Fourche to get to semifinal action where they easily defeated Custer 25-14 and 25-19.
Advancing to the finals, the girls took on Beulah, N.D., beating them in two sets, 25-19 and 25-17

’Cats scramble for win over Cavaliers

The Custer High School volleyball team played a close match against St. Thomas More Sept. 12 night. The match went to five sets and the ’Cats squeaked by with a win as they won that last set with a score of 15-13. The previous sets were close too, with the ’Cats and Cavaliers alternating wins in each set  (25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-13).
The Wildcats started the game with a sizeable lead, but allowed the Cavaliers to catch up—but not enough to win the set, though.

Custer golf marches toward postseason

Post-season competition has arrived for the Custer High School golf team, but before it enters into conference, region and state play the team competed at the Spearfish Invitational Sept. 12 at Spearfish Canyon Country Club.
The team was paced by Jackson Wiles, who placed just outside the top 10 with a score of 89. He was followed by Lane Poper at 94 as well as Ayden Petz, who also fired a 94. Rounding out the Custer scores were Zayden LaPlaca at 95 and Regan Sorenson at 98.

Orioles flies past Wildcat football

A week after it played its best game of the season, the Custer High School football team suffered a regression of sorts as it headed east and was flattened 58-7 by Lennox.
Head coach Russ Bailey said the loss wasn’t a regression in execution, but rather, a regression in aggression.
“We are still not at the level where everyone is doing the right thing at the right time,” Bailey said. “Every mistake we made was amplified because we aren’t playing aggressive football.”

Pesicka hat trick leads ’Cats to tie

Attendees at last Saturday’s home soccer match against James Valley Christian learned one thing for certain—Bohdan Pesicka is deadly from 40 yards out.
The senior netted three goals over the outstretched hand of the Viking goalkeeper from nearly that exact same distance as the Wildcats and the Vikings played to a 3-3 tie.
“Those were really beautiful. Those were some of the best free kicks he’s ever taken,” head coach Hannah Rehmeier said. He was putting them in right over the goalie’s head. He was a key player for us.

Cross crountry hurries in Huron

The Custer High School cross country team ran in the Eldon Knudson Invitational at home in Custer last Thursday before hitting the road to run in Huron last Saturday.
The boys and girls cross country teams ran at their home race at Rocky Knolls Golf Course on Thursday.
In the boys varsity race, Drew Lehman came in fifth place with a time of  17:54.85 Shortly behind him was Sean Shipp, who came in seventh with 18:11.25. In eighth place was Kian Rusch, who ran the race in18:23.60. Austin Drew came in 10th place with his time of 19:00.50.    

Three Ranger girls place in top four

Half the Hill City High School varsity cross country competed at the Lyman Raider Nation Invitational Cross Country Meet in Presho Sept. 16. This was a smaller meet on a flat, fast course. 
Head coach Joe Noyes said races like these are good for the athletes because they see different competition and sometimes determine different race strategies. 
“The ladies performed very well. We had three girls in the top four,” said Noyes. 

Rangers defeat Sturgis, Jones County

The 10-5  Hill City Rangers Girls Volleyball team finally come home for a Tuesday game after a long stretch on the road. The Rangers faced off against Lead-Deadwood last night. Results were not available before press time.
Head coach Allie Henderson is thrilled with how her team is playing. 
“I am happy with how the girls played. It can be difficult to play to your level at all times but they had some really great moments and took advantage of the leads to try some new things out,” she said.
