’Cats place sixth at Mid-Dakota Monster

The Custer High School wrestlers came in sixth on Friday at the Mid-Dakota Monster Tournament at Presho’s Lyman Gardens and head coach Jared Webster says that placing is “awesome” when one considers the size of the tournament and the caliber of the competition.
“We’ve never had three kids in the finals before and we had a shot at putting five or six in the finals,” Webster said of the annual tournament, which attracts both A and B schools from across South Dakota and Nebraska.

Davis victorious at Hot Springs meet

The Hill City Rangers Wrestling team had a huge win at the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza. Eli Isakason  placed eighth and scored 10 team points, while Tanner Davis placed first and scored 28 team points. 
It was a great feeling but weird,” Davis said about winning the tournament. “All of these tournaments I’ve walked into I always had the ‘I wish I was on top of that podium’ idea and I never got it.” 
And while the victory was exciting it’s also slightly bittersweet, knowing as he puts it, “I will never walk into the same gym to wrestle again.”

Girls Team to host Spearfish Thursday

The Hill City High School girls basketball team opens the 2022 portion of its season Thursday evening against the Spearfish Spartans (3-2) and enters the game sporting a record of 2-3. 
The Rangers are on a two-game losing streak entering the game, having lost to St. Thomas More 38-49 just before Christmas and Vermillion New Year’s Eve at the Sioux Falls Pentagon. 
Head coach Wade Ginsbach said, “So far we’ve been tested quite a bit. We’ve played some good teams. I think we're figuring it out.” 

Boys split games at Chadron tourney

The Custer High School boys basketball team closed out the Chadron (Neb.) Rotary Classic last Wednesday, Dec. 29 with a convincing win over the Valentine (Neb.) Badgers in the third place game of the annual holiday tournament.
Three Wildcats cracked double figures in the win, led by Kyle Virtue’s 26 points, as the freshman hit 12 of his 19 shot attempts. Fellow post player Gage Tennyson scored 10 points of his own, while freshman guard Kade Lehman netted 10.

Girls drop Bobcats, fall to Cardinals

You would be hard pressed to find two games at the opposite ends of the spectrum than the two the Custer High School girls basketball team played last weekend at the Chadron (Neb.) Rotary Holiday Classic.
In last Wednesday’s third place game against the Hemingford (Neb.) Bobcats, Custer put on a shooting clinic, hitting 11 three-pointers and shooting 40 percent from the floor in a 60-29 victory.

Boys win bracket at Lakota Nation

Heading into this season, Custer High School head basketball coach Paul Kelley privately worried that his team might struggle mightily at the outset of the season. In fact, he was worried the team would lose a lot.
And why wouldn’t he? The team lost nine seniors to graduation and was looking at a rotation that not only relied on freshmen, but started them as well. He just wasn’t sure how the youngsters would perform when the lights came on and the competition began.

Girls finish 2-2 at Lakota Nation Invitational

On several occasions during the Custer High School girls basketball team’s game against White River last Saturday at the Lakota Nation Invitational, the Wildcats appeared to be poised to get over the hump so to speak, to crack the four-to-six point lead the Tigers held over them for most of the game.
Maleighya Estes just wouldn’t let that happen.

Wrestlers fourth at Holiday Extravaganza

The Custer Wildcats coasted to easy victories in their first two times on the mat in the last week before the Christmas break but ran into a brick wall named Philip area on Saturday at the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza Invitational.   
To start their three days of competition last week, the ’Cats dominated the mats at the Belle Fourche Triangular last Thursday, defeating its dual opponents by wide margins. Custer beat the Belle Fourche Broncs 64-18 and devastated the Lead-Deadwood ’Diggers by a score of 68-12.

Winter sports have begun

Winter sports are well under way, with some unusual changes. The boys wrestling team has two members, Tanner Davis and Elijah Isakson. Due to the lack of numbers the boys can only compete in tournaments and travel to Custer to practice with their wrestlers.
“It’s definitely  different, meeting new kids and trying to bond,” said Davis who adds that they are now “super tight” with the Custer wrestlers.
Davis and Isakson are excited about their season and are motivated to get better.
