’Cats end regular season at 16-15

It looked like the Custer High School girls volleyball team might be headed for an upset against 27-3 Hill City last Tuesday night at the Armory. The Wildcats came out strong in the first set and, aside from several tie scores, led the Rangers most of the way to a hard-fought 25-21 win. 
“That first set we came out and played Wildcat volleyball and it was awesome,” said co-head coach Miranda Jaure following the game. “They just caught on to our offense and we had trouble mixing things up after that.”

Competitive cheer wins conference crown

Fresh off an unexpected win of the Black Hills Conference championship last week, the Custer competitive cheer team is looking forward with expectation to the state A cheer and dance meet in Aberdeen this week. 
The team earned a score of 120.5 at the conference meet in Belle Fourche on Thursday beating out second-place Sturgis by four points (116.5). Douglas placed third in the competition with 115.5 points, Hot Springs was fourth with 109.5 and Belle Fourche came in last with 106 points. 
Coach Tiffany Newman says her reaction to the win was shock.

In a season in which the Wildcat offense has almost exclusively used the run game to topple opponents, it was a pass play that proved to be the biggest play of the night for the Custer High School football team.

Cross county team is Huron bound

The Custer High School cross country varsity squad “got the job done,” in the words of coach Karen Karim. The job to which Karim refers is qualifying for this weekend’s state cross country finals in Huron. In the process, the girls team won the Region 5A title at Pine Ridge on Thursday and the varsity boys took home the runner-up plaque behind St. Thomas More (STM) of Rapid City. 
“The girls again ran a solid team race,” said Karim, adding that a couple of her runners, including senior Mallory Delmont, didn’t feel as good as they have in recent weeks.

Wildcats record at 16-13 in final days of season

The Custer High School girls volleyball team extended its season record to 16-13 Monday night with a five set win against Edgemont on the road. 
The Wildcats beat the Moguls in five sets. Coming back from 16-25 and 22-25 losses in the first two sets, Custer stayed in the game and ended winning the next three games (25-17), (25-18) and (15-8). 
On Tuesday last week, the Wildcats traveled to Pine Ridge to take on the Red Cloud Lady Crusaders adding another win to their record. 

Wildcats dominate conference meet

The Custer varsity cross country teams made it two-in-a-row as Black Hills Conference champions last Wednesday, running a day earlier than planned to beat a snowstorm forecast for Thursday. 
“We worked out really hard on Monday,” said coach Karen Karim, “so they didn’t by any means have ‛fresh legs’ going into that meet but they came through and ran what they needed to.”

Girls volleyball season record now at 14-12

The Custer High School volleyball team had rematches with two teams it had faced earlier in the season last week, both with similar results bringing the team’s season record to 14 wins and 12 losses. 
On Tuesday the Wildcats traveled to Hot Springs for a rematch with the Bison. In the previous game Sept. 12 the Wildcats were victorious in three sets.
Again they came away from Tuesday’s match with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 win, but co-head coach Jill Hohn says the Bison were a harder team to beat this time. 

Grace runs for 319 yards, seven touchdowns in win

In a must-win game last Friday, the Custer High School football team needed its best players to have big games.
Micaiah Grace took that to heart.
In a wild game in which the teams combined for 15 touchdowns and 103 points, it was Grace who stood out the most as the Wildcat running back had the game of his life, piling up 319 yards rushing and what is believed to be a school record seven touchdowns in the ’Cats’ 62-41 victory over Lead-Deadwood at Ferguson Field in Deadwood.

Competitive cheer team strong heading into finals

Despite having to make more changes to its routine due to the recent loss of team members, the Custer competitive cheer team cheered its way to a fourth place finish in the Douglas Invitational Cheer and Dance Invite on Saturday in Box Elder. 
Rapid City Stevens placed first in the meet with 208.5 points followed by Douglas in second with 179.5. Hot Springs placed third with 172.
The Custer squad earned 166.5 points from the judges putting Sturgis and Belle Fourche in fifth and sixth place respectively.  

Run Crazy Horse runners set the pace

The Run Crazy Horse Marathon and Half- Marathon was held Sunday.

The race started at Crazy Horse Memorial. Participants wound their way through the Black Hills before finishing on Main Street in Hill City. It was a beautiful, sun-shiny day with perfect temperatures for running.

Over 1,000 people from 45 states, Canada and the United Kingdom registered for the race, said Emily Wheeler, race organizer.
