Cheer works back from crash

Still recovering from injuries sustained in a collision between two teammates at the Custer Invitational Cheer and Dance Meet last week, the Custer competitive cheer team finished fourth out of four teams at the Sturgis Scooper Spirit Invite on Monday. 
Working with a replacement for Jade Carder who was kicked in the head in the competition last week and was still on the injured list Monday night, the team performed its regular routine at Sturgis but managed to score only a 92.5 compared with 116.5 for tourney-winning Hot Springs. 

Crash foils cheer team’s chance

The Custer High School competitive cheer team looked strong going into their own Custer Invitational Cheer and Dance competition on Monday. The girls on the team were well-rehearsed with a routine that included lots of flying and tumbling stunts and well-timed moves. Then disaster struck. 
Shortly into the musical part of the routine, two of the girls collided during a tumbling stunt resulting in senior Jade Carder getting kicked in the head. 

Mistakes again costly for Wildcats

In a game that featured big plays, three lead changes and a two-hour weather delay, it was a series of miscues by the Custer Wildcats that put the final nails in the coffin of Custer’s 27-24 loss to Belle Fourche last Friday evening in Belle Fourche.
Trailing by that 27-24 margin with only minutes to play, Custer was starting to march down the field toward a potential winning score, but a Dathon Elmore pass intended for Kaleb Wragge was intercepted by the Broncs’ Lan Fuhrer, the Broncs’ third interception of the game.

XC girls take first at Huron Invite

The Custer varsity girls cross country team brought home a first-place trophy from the Huron Invitational meet over the weekend, competing against several Class AA schools and running on the course where the state finals will be held in a few weeks.
Competing in what Coach Karen Karim called a fast-paced, difficult race, the Custer girls finished with all six runners in the top 35 of a field of 92, earning a team score of 73. 

Wildcats fall to STM

The Custer girls volleyball team brought its season record to four wins and nine losses in play last week both at home and at the Cavalier Clash in Tyndall. 
On Tuesday last week, the Wildcats hosted St. Thomas More (STM) of Rapid City at the Armory, losing in three hard-fought sets. 
The first set was tied several times in the first half of the game, but after a 17-17 tie, the Cavaliers began to pull steadily away to win it 20-25.  

Golfers place second at conference meet

Austin Eggers and Gunner Prior both shot an 87 to tie for third place as the Custer High School golf team played its way to a second-place finish at the Black Hills Conference Golf Tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club Monday.
Also finishing in the top 10 for the Wildcats was Dustyn Fish, who finished in a tie for seventh place at 87. Rounding out Custer’s scores were Dylan Polzine at 97 and Ryder Bailey at 113.

Three weeks into the season, the Custer High School football team has now experienced both sides of a lopsided scoreboard.

Fresh off a convincing win over the Spearfish Spartans only a week earlier, the Wildcats were held to only 117 yards of offense and gave up 34 first-half points in last Friday’s 46-8 loss to the visiting Lennox Orioles.

Custer wins junior varsity golf invitational tourney

Wildcat golfer Justus Kramer shot a 47 to lead the Custer JV golf team to a first place victory in the Custer JV Invitational meet Friday at Rocky Knolls Golf Course. 
Teammate Ethan Lappe was seven strokes back at 54 to tie with Sturgis Brown’s Evan Stroud for second.
Other Custer golfers included Zach Douglas, 55; Matt Merrill, 58; Carter Bader, 67; Gage McGarrigle., 69; Dillon Baumstarck, 73; Mason Kieborz and Taycen Barnes, 78; and Reed Fortune, 81. 

Cross country does well at Belle

Custer’s varsity and JV cross country teams took home three first-place finishes and one second from the Belle Fourche Invite Thursday in spite of what coach Karen Karim called “terrible weather.” 

Karim said it was raining and windy in Belle Fourche and the course was soggy and slow, making for less impressive race times than the team had at the recent Augustana Twilight Meet.
