Woodward gets big Xtreme Bulls win

Jestyn Woodward is exactly the sort of cowboy organizers had in my mind when they created Xtreme Bulls events. He grew up dreaming of riding the ornery beasts, following in the footsteps of his father, Jacey, and grandpa, Jesse. He started at 9 years old. A decade later, the 19-year-old Woodward is enjoying an eye-opening breakthrough campaign, while positioning himself to achieve a dream of a lifetime.  
His wake-up-pinch-self season continued Thursday night as he captured the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo Xtreme Bulls win with a score of 168 points on two head.  

Wildcat golfers place ninth at state meet

The Custer High School Wildcat girls golf team played in the Class A State Tournament last Monday and Tuesday and came out in ninth place with a score of 805. The top three teams were Sioux Falls Christian, Vermillion and St. Thomas More (STM), with scores at 687, 695 and 709, respectively.
Winning the tournament  with 156 strokes was STM’s Rylan Horning, a freshman. The win continues a family legacy for Horning as her mother, Ashley Horning, once won the Class B state golf tournament for STM in 1997.

Boys second, girls third at state track meet

Blake Boyster capped one of the most decorated sprinting careers in Custer High School history with two more gold medals last weekend at the South Dakota Class A State Track Meet, and added a pair of silvers for good measure.
Boyster won the 400 for the third straight year, posting a time of 48.96, which was the fastest time across all classes by .03, while also winning the 200 at a time of 22.69.

Wildcat golfers take second at regions

The Region 4A girls golf tournament was held last Tuesday at Meadowbrook golf course in Rapid City. Out of five placing teams, Custer came out second overall with a score of 411. They were behind St. Thomas More (STM), whose team scored 359. Coming in third, fourth and fifth were Belle Fourche, Hot Springs and Lead-Deadwood, respectively.
“Everybody had a pretty good day. Overall, I was really happy with it,” said head coach Hailey Uphoff.

Boys, girls sweep Region 8A track titles

The Custer High School track team appears to be rounding into peak form at the right time, as both the boys and girls teams ran, leaped and threw their way to sweeping the Region 8A Track Meet championships last Thursday in Belle Fourche.
The Wildcat girls piled up 192.5 points, over 80 points ahead of second-place finishing Belle Fourche, which had 112 points.

Paulsen brothers head to hall of fame

A pair of Custer brothers who are Wildcat basketball legends are among 13 former players who had exceptional careers in the state who will be inducted into the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame during the 13th annual banquet Aug. 26 at the Ramkota Hotel in Sioux Falls.
Paige and the late Derek Paulsen are among those set to be inducted into the hall of fame. Wildcat basketball fans will no doubt remember the brothers, who in the late 1990s and early 2000s produced some of the best seasons in the history of Custer High School.

Stiefel, Boyster shine at Howard Wood

Two of Custer’s standout track athletes appear to be rounding into their best form as the postseason approaches.
Ciana Stiefel and Blake Boyster both had big days last Saturday at the Howard Wood Dakota relays, with Boyster running a 48.80 to win the 400 meter while Stiefel set a Class A record in the pole vault, clearing 12-7 to win the gold medal. The height moved Stiefel into second-place all-time in the state in girls pole vault and also broke a Howard Wood record that has stood for 15 years.

Wildcat golfers third at Black Hills Conference

The Custer High School girls golf team competed in the pre-conference tournament in Hot Springs last Thursday and then back in Hot Springs for the Black Hills Conference on Monday. The Wildcats secured a third place finish at the Black Hills Conference tournament with a team score of 418. They finished behind Spearfish and St. Thomas More (STM) with scores at 379 and 365, respectively. 

Wildcat golfers get into the swing of season

The Custer High School Wildcat girls golf team competed in the Sturgis Invite at Boulder Canyon last Friday and at the Custer Invitational at Rocky Knolls Golf Course Monday.
Head coach Haley Uphoff said she was happy with the turnout at both meets. In Sturgis, the team finished fourth with a score of 412. They were behind Saint Thomas More (STM) at 363, Spearfish at 371 and Rapid City Stevens at 394. Uphoff reported that she was pleased to finish behind only one other Class A school, STM, at the Sturgis meet. Both Spearfish and Stevens are larger class AA schools.

Larsen wins pair of golds

It was the Jojo Larsen show at the Black Hills Track Classic in Sturgis last Saturday, as the sophomore Wildcat sprinter ran her way to a pair of gold medal finishes, winning the 100 in a time of 12.43 while also winning the 200 at a time of 25.86, the latter of which is the fastest time in the state in Class A this spring.
“It was a good day for her. She looked smooth, strong and fast,” Custer head coach Karen Karim said.
Larsen rounded out her day with a sixth-place finish in the 400, running a time of 1:02.46.
