Track team gears up for state run

What do you do for an encore?
That’s the question that will be asked of Custer High School senior sprinter Blake Boyster this spring, as he takes to the track for his final season as a Wildcat off a state meet a year ago that saw him crowned state champion in three races—the 100, 200 and 400. Boyster scored over half of the Wildcats’ points at the Class A State Track Meet last May, a meet in which the boys placed third.

Naugle inducted into Hall of Fame

Custer School District superintendent Mark Naugle was inducted to the Black Hills Sports Officials Assication Hall of Fame March 15. Naugle was recongnized for his achievement at the March 16 school board meeting as well.
“I am humbled and honored by my inclusion in the Black Hills Sports Officials Association Hall of Fame,” said Naugle.

Cold-shooting ’Cats fall to Bison

It was one and done for the Custer High School boys basketball team in the Region 8A playoffs as the Wildcats traveled to Hot Springs Feb. 28 and suffered through a tough night on the offensive end in a 45-26 loss that ended their season.
“We did everything we needed to do defensively. We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” head coach Paul Kelley said. “You have to give credit to Hot Springs. They were extremely physical. They are a team with great quickness. They interrupted us and took us out of our game.”

Custer fourth at state, Weiss is state champion

The Wildcats hit the mat for the final time this past weekend in Rapid City at the Class B State Wrestling Tournament. Custer had a record number of wrestlers compete in the tournament—12 boys and two girls. They also had one state champion with Trey Weiss. With the wrestlers’ combined points, they finished fourth at the tournament.

Rangers defeat ’Cats for third time

For the third time this season, the Custer High School girls basketball team squared off with the Hill City Rangers.
And, for the third time this season, the Wildcats were defeated by the Rangers.
This time was the most damaging of the three defeats, however, as the Rangers ended the Wildcats’ season with a 52-45 win last Thursday evening at the Armory in the first round of Region 8A play.

’Cats win region, qualify 14 for state meet

The Custer High School wrestling team competed at the region 4B tournament at Lead-Deadwood High School Saturday. The wrestlers made school history in two ways—one, for sending 14 wrestlers to the state tournament (12 boys, two girls), which is a new school record, and two, for winning the region tournament for Custer’s first time. The wrestlers competed against 15 other teams in the region and scored a combined total of 271.5 points. They were followed by Philip and Stanley County with 247 points and 130 points, respectively.

Girls hope third time is the charm against Rangers

Is the third time the charm? The Custer High School girls basketball team certainly hopes so.
For the third time this season the Wildcats will tangle with the Hill City Rangers on the basketball court, this time in the opening round of Region 8A play Thursday night at 6 p.m. after the game was postponed from Tuesday due to the impending snowstorm. The Wildcats hope to defeat the Rangers for the first time, having lost two close games to the Rangers already this season.

Boys lose to Hill City, fall to sixth seed in regional play

With a home playoff berth on the line and Hill City’s best player unavailable, it wasn’t hard to imagine the Custer High School boys basketball team breezing to a win over the Hill City Rangers Monday night in Hill City and sewing up a home tilt as the fourth seed in next week’s first round of Region 8A play.
The Rangers had other plans, however.
It was the Rangers who not only won, but did so by  a convincing margin as Custer fell to the Rangers 66-53 in the regular season finale for both teams.

Boys tear down Wall, fall to Spearfish

Three players in double figures and domination on the glass led the Custer High School boys basketball team to a convincing 71-36 win over the visiting Wall Eagles last Saturday evening at the Armory.
Kyle Virtue and Cade Lehman scored 16 points apiece in the win, while Rhett Lowe was also in double figures with 10 points. Custer also grabbed 37 rebounds compared to the visiting Eagles’ 18. Cody Dirkes had 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Offense falters as girls lose to Spartans

It was a light week for the Custer High School girls basketball team last week as the Wildcats played only one game, a 46-29 loss at Spearfish last Thursday.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start in the game, as they scored only eight first-half points. The ’Cats played the Spartans to a draw in the second half, but by then the damage was done.
“We didn’t have a ton of turnovers, we just weren’t making shots,” head coach Tobey Cass said. “We weren’t pushing the ball like we usually do and we weren’t attacking the hoop. We slowed the game down, and that’s not our forté.”
