Wrestling team places third at Winner Invite

The Custer High School wrestling team headed east for the Winner Invitational on Saturday to face some tougher competition after a near sweep of the Black Hills Conference the previous weekend. The tournament came with some “ups and downs,” said head coach Jared Webster.

Girls edge Wall, blast Newell

The Custer High School girls basketball team rebounded from a couple of losses by handily defeating Newell last Thursday two nights after edging out Wall 82-77 in overtime.
Head coach Tobey Cass said the team played well in the 67-43 win over Newell, saying the team took care of the basketball, pushed the pace and played its style of basketball throughout the game.
“That’s what we want to do. They did a great job,” Cass said. “I was pleased with them, especially after the game Tuesday you can have a let down, but we came back and brought it.”

Wildcat wrestlers dominate BHC meet

The Custer High School boys and girls wrestling teams had a busy weekend as they traveled to the McCook Central Dual with Kingsbury County and Tri- Valley Jan. 12, then to the Philip dual for the boys and a dual with Hot Springs for the girls Jan. 13 and then back to the Hills for the Black Hills Conference meet in Lead Jan. 14.
The Wildcats dominated at every turn, winning each dual and the Black Hills Conference with 257.5 points. The Douglas/Rapid City Christian/New Underwood team came in second with 156.5 points and Spearfish in third with 114.5 points.

Boys’ losing streak extends to four games

The Custer High School boys basketball team is still winless in 2023, as the team had its losing streak extended to four games last week when it fell to St. Thomas More last Thursday in Rapid City before losing to Red Cloud the next night at the Armory.
The Wildcats, now 4-6 on the season, last won Dec. 30 in Chadron, Neb., but head coach Paul Kelley is quick to point out the team has had four quality opponents during its losing streak.

Girls lose to Cavaliers, Crusaders

A hot start to the season for the Custer High School girls basketball team had some cold water poured on it last week courtesy of two of the top five Class A teams in the state.
Last Friday it was the fifth-ranked and undefeated Red Cloud Crusaders who stormed out to a 46-23 lead at the half and cruised to a 59-44 win at the Armory.
Head coach Tobey Cass said the second quarter was the big problem for the Wildcats, as the Crusaders’ press led to easy baskets, as did the Crusaders’ break off missed Custer shots.

Wildcats pick up two more wins

The Custer High School girls basketball team is off to its best start in years, as it ran its record to 7-1 last week with a convincing win over the visiting Sturgis Scoopers as well as a narrow win over Platte-Geddes at the Sacred Hoops Classic at the Mitchell Corn Palace last Saturday.
Neither team shot well in the matchup against the Black Panthers, as the Wildcats shot only 30 percent from the field, but Platte-Geddes was worse at 24 percent in the 38-33 Custer win.

Boys fall to Warriors, Scoopers

It was a tough week for the Custer High School boys basketball team, as the Wildcats lost a pair of games, including a 55-31 loss to Winner at the Sacred Hoops Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell last Saturday.
It was a miserable game in terms of shooting for the Wildcats, as they made only 27 percent of their shot attempts, including a two of 15 effort from behind the three point line.

Wrestlers face off in Winner, Lyman County

Wildcat wrestlers faced double-duty last week as they competed in the Winner Triangular with the  Winner Area Warriors and the Chamberlain Cubs on Thursday and in the Mid Dakota Monster tournament in Lyman County last Saturday.
At the Winner Triangular, Custer beat out both teams, including the  top-ranked dual team in the state, the Winner Area Warriors, who came in third at the state tournament last year. The Wildcats won 45-22 against the Chamberlain Cubs and 34-26 against the Warriors. The Wildcats are now 6-0 for duals.

Boys claim Chadron tourney title

The Custer High School boys basketball team improved its record to 4-2 by picking up a pair of wins on its way to winning the Chadron (Neb.) Rotary Classic last weekend at the Chicoine Center on the campus of Chadron State College.
The Wildcats opened the tournament with a 75-50 win over Valentine, Neb., before defeating host Chadron 52-38 in the championship game.
In the win over Chadron the Wildcats used a staunch defensive effort—including holding the Cardinals to four points in the opening frame—to come away with the win.

Wrestlers dominate in Harding County

The Wildcat wrestling team had a strong showing last Thursday, Dec. 29, at the Harding County Invitational with seven wrestlers placing first and several more also placing.
Starting off the list of the many first-place finishes on the mat was Tyler Trant in the 106-pound weight class, pinning each of his opponents except in the semifinal match against Logan Tyndall of Belle Fourche which he won by two points, 4-2.
