Boys tear down Wall, fall to Spearfish

Three players in double figures and domination on the glass led the Custer High School boys basketball team to a convincing 71-36 win over the visiting Wall Eagles last Saturday evening at the Armory.
Kyle Virtue and Cade Lehman scored 16 points apiece in the win, while Rhett Lowe was also in double figures with 10 points. Custer also grabbed 37 rebounds compared to the visiting Eagles’ 18. Cody Dirkes had 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Offense falters as girls lose to Spartans

It was a light week for the Custer High School girls basketball team last week as the Wildcats played only one game, a 46-29 loss at Spearfish last Thursday.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start in the game, as they scored only eight first-half points. The ’Cats played the Spartans to a draw in the second half, but by then the damage was done.
“We didn’t have a ton of turnovers, we just weren’t making shots,” head coach Tobey Cass said. “We weren’t pushing the ball like we usually do and we weren’t attacking the hoop. We slowed the game down, and that’s not our forté.”

Girls win two, fall to Belle Fourche

A strong first half gave way to a Belle Fourche comeback in the second half as the Custer High School girls basketball team fell 59-53 to the visiting Broncs last Saturday afternoon at the Armory.
The Wildcats looked primed for the upset at the outset of the game, storming out to an early lead  largely behind the shooting of Ramsey Karim. Karim started the game on fire, nailing three three-pointers, the latter of which gave Custer a 16-10 lead.

Boys build big early lead, hang on against Broncs

It was a long week with some agonizing losses for the Custer High School boys basketball team, but the Wildcats closed out the week last Saturday afternoon on a positive note as they were on the right side of the scoreboard in a close game in a 73-67 win over visiting Belle Fourche.
Custer head coach Paul Kelley said the win was a big one for his team’s confidence.
“We’ve been losing all these close games. You have to find a way to get over that hump,” he said. “We did the things we needed to do.”

Custer first at Hill City meet

Both boys and girls Custer High School wrestling teams wrestled against 19 other teams in the Black Hills Classic tournament in Hill City last weekend. This was the final regular season meet before regions in Lead Feb.18 and the state tournament in Rapid City Feb. 23-25.
The Custer boys team beat out all other teams and won first place at the tournament Behind Custer’s 230.5 points was Rapid City Central with 217 points and Philip Area with 171.5. Many wrestlers placed in the tournament, and several won first.

Fascinating Super Bowl awaits us

When Super Bowl LVII kicks off next Sunday in Glendale, Ariz., it will mark the first time both top seeds made the Super Bowl since 2017. Philadelphia was involved in that Super Bowl, as well, as the top-seeded Eagles and Nick Foles went  on to defeat the AFC’s top-seed, the New England Patriots, in a high-scoring affair.
The Eagles were this year’s top seed in the NFC playoffs, and parlayed that regular season success into a Super Bowl berth after defeating the San Francisco 49ers, aided by the fact the 49ers essentially ran out of quarterbacks during the game.

Wildcat wrestlers now 16-0 in duals

The Custer wrestling team had another busy week as it had a dual against Lead-Deadwood on Tuesday, a triangular with Chadron and Douglas on Thursday and a tournament in Belle Fourche on Friday and Saturday.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats seemed to dig their dual against the Diggers, coming out on top with a 54 point lead. Custer only lost two matches in the 144 and 150-pound weightclasses.

Girls lose twice by identical scores

It was a game both teams seemingly desperately wanted to win.
And, at times, it looked like a game neither team wanted to win.
Such was the case last Friday evening at the Armory as the visiting Hill City Rangers came to town and upset the Wildcats 56-51 in a game plagued by missed shots, fouls and plenty of turnovers.

Girls wrestling on the rise

The Custer High School girls wrestling team faced off with Chadron, Neb., and Douglas in Custer last Thursday and competed in the Belle Fourche Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The team won each of their duals on Thursday, narrowly defeating Chadron by one point 24-23 and beating Douglas 24-9.
This week also saw a new teammate added to the girls roster in Maddie Lehrkamp. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and this year’s team has shown why.

Wildcats win thriller over visiting Rangers

With only five seconds left in last Friday evening’s Custer vs. Hill City basketball game, Ranger senior Jairo Escobar corralled a teammate’s miss and put the ball in for two over the outstretched arms of two Wildcat defenders.
Unfortunately for Escobar and the Rangers, Hill City was down three points.
The clock expired as the ball fell through the net to the ground, setting off a raucous celebration in the Armory as the Wildcats held on for a 66-65 win in a game that saw lead change after lead change between what on this night was two evenly-matched teams.
