The election is drawing near

Greetings! Here we are less than two weeks from the June 2 Primary Election. We had our meet and greet the candidates from Custer County this past Saturday. This was a neat way to get together in spite of our COVID-19 restrictions. Thanks to Marilyn Oakes, Custer County Republican Chair and all the volunteers who pulled off this event. The weather didn’t cooperate the best. It was windy and rainy out but like they used to say when I was a paratrooper, “If it ain’t rainin’, we ain’t trainin’,” because it seemed it always rained when we were on maneuvers!

Regarding my Elevate legislative scorecard

The following is a response to the recent Elevate Legislative Scorecard. First of all, I am part of a family business that has been in place over 36 years in Rapid City.  How can one be anti-business when one is part of a longtime family business?  I am curious why several bills were omitted from the scorecard that would be considered “business friendly” bills from the 2020 Session, in my opinion.  

Americans want to get to work

Last Friday a bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate that would provide a monthly government check of $2,000 a month to those struggling to make ends meet during the current COVID-19 pandemic. A married couple would receive $4,000 a month as well as $2,000 a month for each child up to three children. The income threshold would be $120,000 per individual and be retroactive to March.

Mother’s Day: past, present, future

Our church was the only one in Custer City that met last Sunday, Mother’s Day. Afterwards my family met at our home to grill out for lunch and in the afternoon my sister and I visited my mother who is quarantined at Monument Health Assisted Living. We put messages and suncatchers on her window and visited as best we could at her window. It was a far cry from last year when we were all together for Mother’s Day. We had no clue the things that would transpire in the next 12 months.

Greetings again! So, how is the election going?  I am asking because, like you, I am not sure. This COVID-19 communist Chinese virus sure changes how elections are conducted. Let’s review how we can vote in the upcoming Primary June 2.  
Of course, you can vote on June 2 at your ordinary voting location.

What HB1156 meant

I wanted to share  the details of HB1156 from the 2020 session. This bill would have prohibited the conduct of certain invasive physical examinations or screenings on students in a school district without parental consent. Already in Federal Law 20 US Code 1232h, Protection of Pupil Rights Act—my bill would have stopped this overreach.  

Coronavirus and my perforated colon

Nine years ago about right now I developed a sharp pain in the middle of my abdomen. I had struggled off and on for years with diverticulitis and throughout the winter and spring of 2011 I had several bouts of it. Usually when one of these attacks came on I would change my diet and take it easy for a while and eventually the aching pain, usually located on the lower left side of my abdomen would go away in a few days. Occasionally I would have to see a doctor and get a course of antibiotics to deal with an infection as I did when I was first diagnosed.

Getting our state back to normal

I know everyone is eager to get back to their daily routines and dive back into what they love doing. But it’s important to remember that some people will never get to return to normal. I lost my dad at a very young age. That experience greatly changed the path that I was on. Similarly, this COVID-19 pandemic has greatly changed the path so many South Dakotans were on as well.
