Forest Service gives OK to gold drilling west of Custer

The U.S. Forest Service has given the go-ahead for a Minnesota company to drill holes in search of gold near Custer.
Minneapolis-based F3 Gold received approval for its Newark Exploration Drilling Project in the Black Hills National Forest. The 36 drilling sites are scattered across national forest land about four miles west of Custer. The exploration would take up to one year.
The project will use a diamond-tipped drill to obtain core samples from depths reaching 3,000 feet. All drill holes are required to be plugged afterward.

Fire district meetings planned

A resolution required to bring forth the vote on the proposed Custer Fire Protection District won’t be voted on until an August meeting of the Custer County Commission due to a state law that requires the election for the district to be held within 60 days of the vote.

Council gears up for summer fun

The Custer City Council worked through a quick agenda at its June 17 meeting, hearing updates on infrastructure projects and doing some housekeeping ahead of some coming town events and celebrations.
Trent Bruce of DGR Engineering, the firm helping the city through the process of the wastewater plant upgrades, gave a rundown on the construction progress of the wastewater treatment facility project, saying things are “moving along as planned.”

Kids rock Custer

The Kids Rock Camp performance packed the Custer Beacon last Saturday as several bands made up of elementary-age students rocked the crowd with their own original songs. Kids Rock offers students an opportunity to learn an instrument, form a band, write original music and then perform it for the community in a special concert. The camp aims to  encourage collaboration, confidence, leadership skills, problem solving and creative self-expression through hands-on music education and performance.

Fireworks a go

The skies will be alight with fireworks this July 4 in Custer, as the $25,000 fundraising goal to keep the annual show going has been met thanks to the help of community members, businesses and other people near and far.
It was only a few months ago the Custer Volunteer Fire Department issued a warning the fireworks could cease if money was not raised to pay for the $1,000-a-minute show.

Hulse, Baumann popular in Custer County

Amber Hulse’s victory in the District 30 Senate primary was due in large part to her popularity on the western side of Custer County, a look into the voting results by precinct shows.
Hulse garnered a much larger percentage of votes in the City of Custer and area around the city in her matchup with incumbent Julie Frye-Mueller, while Frye-Mueller was more popular with voters in eastern Custer County.
In Custer County’s largest voting precinct, Bear Rock, Hulse picked up 256 votes, while Frye-Mueller recieved 208.

County chiefs weigh in on proposed district

In a word, that is the prevailing reason for a pair of Custer County volunteer fire departments voting against joining the planned Custer Fire Protection District.
When plans for the district first got rolling, three rural districts on the western side of the county—Custer Highlands, Pringle and Argyle—were all approached about joining with Custer to form a fire district encompassing the entire western side of the county.

Custer school board proposes budget

District superintendent Mark Naugle and  co-business managers for Custer School District, Terri  Reynolds and Sarah Wedge, presented the proposed budget for the district at the June 10 school board meeting held in Hermosa. The total dollar  amount represented by the budget is  $17,462,589. The total amount of the district’s tax revenue request is $12,722,037, which is 3.92 percent more than last year’s request.
