The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks (GFP) Commission has voted to let the Federal Aviation Administration license lapse for the Custer State Park airport, meaning the airport’s days were over effective Dec. 31 of last year.
Nick Harrington, communications manager for GFP, said immediate costs to repair or update the airport would have been $250,000, and would have needed to be completed within the next 18 months. Longer term, within the next seven to 10 years, the runway would have needed a complete rebuild, which is estimated to cost $2 to $3 million.
