Leadership classes offered

Interested in developing your leadership skills? How about using those skills to benefit the Custer Community?
The Custer Area Economic Development Corporation is organizing another IMPACT leadership development course this fall to run over six weeks in October and November The classs will be every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., and from Oct. 10 to Nov. 21.
The course was established to encourage and equip present and future leaders in the Custer community.

City council sets budget for $12.6M

The Custer City Council passed the first reading of an appropriation ordinance at its Sept. 3 meeting, setting the city budget at $12,658,432, down drastically from last year’s budget, which sat around $17 million. Now, the budget is nearly the same as it was for 2023, which was also about $12.6 million. The reason for last year’s budget hike was mostly due to the city’s project to upgrade the wastewater treatment system, which is now nearing completion.

Ministry shares love in parks

A group in Custer State Park has been working to “be a light in communities and spread love to people in the parks,” said Lilly Allen with A Christian Ministry in National Parks (ACMNP), a grassroots student-led ministry that aims to provide interdenominational Christian worship services for people in the nation’s parks—for visitors, park employees and even some locals. ACMNP sends ministry teams to several national parks in the United States and a couple state parks as well.

New ADA sidewalks now at Gates Park

The sidewalks at Gates Park have undergone a big upgrade recently as they are now up to Americans with Disabilities Act specifications.
The need for the updated sidewalks was identified in a Custer City parks master plan done in 2017, said  Steve Pischke, chairperson of the city Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee. The work has taken less than a year to complete and was bid out earlier in this calendar year.  

Hermosa switches gears on water project again

A Town of Hermosa water project for which the Custer County Commission has allocated $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding is set to change again, but Hermosa town officials say it’s the last time the scope of the project will be changed.
It was February 2022 when the Custer County Commission first began to allocate $1.7 million given it through ARPA, a post-Covid-19 pandemic program administered by the federal government.

Over the roughly 120 years since the United States Forest Service (USFS) was established as an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the USFS has pursued cooperative relationships with the agricultural community, particularly through managed grazing of federal lands. Its objectives published in 1905 state, “Every effort will be made to assist the stock owners to a satisfactory distribution of stock on the range in order to secure greater harmony among citizens...and to obtain a more permanent, judicious and profitable use of the range.”

County ponders smaller lot sizes

The housing crunch in Custer County has led to the Custer County Commission investigating the possibility of lowering the size of acreage required for home construction.
At the Aug. 21 meeting of the commission, the commission heard from county planning director Terri Kester, who presented the county planning commission’s recommendation to the county to do a statement policy for high and low-density subdivisions, which would steer county policy should the commission decide to lower the lot size required for development.

Group wants to secede from road district

Can members of an already-established road district secede to form their own road district?
That was the question raised at the Aug. 21 meeting of the Custer County Commission, when a member of the Saddleback Road District came before the commission to discuss the possibility of her and three other Saddleback members leaving that district to form the Concho Trail Road District.
