The Hill City School District is celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week May 4-8.
“Teacher Appreciation Week at Hill City is a special time to recognize the dedication, passion and impact of our educators and staff,” said elementary principal Samantha Weaver. 
Parents and community members can help celebrate the teachers and staff by dropping off gifts, food, drinks or just a simple note of thanks.

Merchants ready for battle

The first ever Hill City Burger Battle is coming to Hill City April 26 through May 7. The event features 11 participating restaurants from downtown to the Three Forks area. The restaurants are competing for bragging rights and are coming up with creations that stretch the imaginations and will quench the palette.

Run for the Hills

Run for the Hills is an upcoming community road race scheduled for May 3, as part of the fundraising efforts of A Heart for the Parks. 
The event is dedicated to raising funds to support and enhance park improvements within the community.
The event includes a 5K, 10K and free 1K for the kids. A small entry fee of $28 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K will be charged with all proceeds going to the nonprofit.

— On April 16, a job fair was held at the Little White Church in Hill City. The purpose of the job fair was to help those who would soon be without work due to the closure of the Rushmore Forest Products sawmill outside of Hill City find good, steady employment ... The Hill City School Board (HCSB) voted to approve the proposal of food service management company Lunchtime Solutions. The approval, which came at the most recent board meeting, meant that Lunchtime Solutions would run the school district’s food service next year.

Elizabeth’s Coffee opens second location

Elizabeth’s Coffee announced last Wednesday that it will open a second location, expanding operations to the Coffee Cabin on Hwy. 385 near Three Forks. 
The new location will feature many of its most popular items as well as seasonal favorites according to Elizabeth Knapp. 
“We will have the burritos, the rolls and the ham and cheese croissants like we do downtown,” said owner Rudi McDaniels. “But we will rotate things, like donuts, biscottis and have all sorts of specials.”

—The Hill City Arts Council was pleased to announce that the 2021 Steve Thorpe Award winner was Hill City native Brent Morris.  Morris plays his guitar and sings because he loves doing it, and he loves the camaraderie of other performers. Morris received a bronze harmonica and a cash award at the final 2021 Open Stage event on March 27 at High Country Guest Ranch.  The award is a result of  Thorpe’s promotion of music and the arts in the Black Hills by giving children harmonicas and urging them to play along with him.

Turning Point USA Faith hub launching in Southern Hills

A new Turning Point (TP) USA Faith hub is launching in the Southern Hills, including Hill City, Keystone, Custer County and Fall River County. The project is being undertaken by a group of community leaders and spearheaded by third-generation Custer resident Pat Baumann.

As a young single mother, Cummins recalls facing significant financial hardships and the support she received to make it through.
