Early voting and Amendment Charlie

It’s early voting season!  Yep, it began last Friday, April 22, and goes to June 6. The actual Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 7.  Our General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Early voting can be accomplished at your county courthouse.  
I stopped by my county courthouse (Pennington) and picked up a sample ballot along with what they call a “Primary Ballot Question Information Pamphlet.” This pamphlet is put out by our Secretary of State’s office.

Impeachment now moves to Senate

At 11:04  April 12, 2022, 36 of 70 lawmakers of the House of Representatives voted to impeach attorney general Jason Ravnsborg (pronounced rounsborg).  This was the very first impeachment since statehood Nov. 2, 1889. Thirty-six was a simple majority of House members elected.  We did have three House members excused but a simple majority is figured of the number of House members elected, not the number of House members present.

Property tax reform, I’m on it

As the desire to leave the urban congestion behind them, South Dakota, and especially the Black Hills has been experiencing a huge influx of people moving here from all over the United States. I understand why they would want to relocate from places that are becoming undesirable to live and raise a family.

We are no strangers to signs in our area. While some states are devoid of billboards and such, we may in fact be just the opposite.

Patience, perseverance and crocheting

I was 9 when I learned how to crochet. Since then, I have completed countless projects from afghans to stuffed animals to scarves. Some of these projects were incredibly intricate. It took deep concentration to interpret the pattern correctly, make all the little pieces and sew them together. So when I found a simple crochet kit for a cute book bag, I wasn’t expecting to have any problems. 

I don’t support a Convention of States

Now that session is over our campaign season is beginning. I will run for re-election as your state senator in District 30. I appreciate all of the support and encouragement to continue representing the citizens of our great state.
I am very happy to have had the opportunity to work with everyone on stopping the Custer State Campground and expansion of municipal campgrounds.  The state does not need to be competing with the private sector. Big thank you to all of you who helped with those issues.

The importance of reading the fine print

I admit it.
I didn’t read the fine print. 
And now, like many of you, I regret it.
 Had I known that in the 59th section of the 95 sectioned Initiated Measure 26 there was a provision forcing all cities in the state to offer a medical marijuana dispensary license I would have “just said no.”

I will vote to impeach Ravnsborg

“After careful and comprehensive investigation and consideration of the facts and application law, a majority of the select committee hereby concludes Attorney General Ravnsborg did not commit an impeachable offense in his conduct surrounding the death of Joe Boever,” committee chairman and House Speaker Spencer Gosch, R-Glenham, said following more than four hours of closed door deliberations. “The select committee recommends that articles of impeachment do not issue.”

Edgemont play was welcome escape

This is a time when inflation is hitting all of us in our pocketbooks, making our disposable cash non-existent, national safety concerns are at an all-time high and property taxes are skyrocketing.
I have to admit that it was unbelievably refreshing to attend the Edgemont High School’s play last Thursday evening for a performance of, “Chateau Le Roach,” or as we in America would say, the House of the Cockroach. It seems that the hotel has a “slight” cockroach problem (to say the least).

How a red scarf encouraged me

One of my favorite authors, Holley Gerth, has a pair of red boots that she wears whenever she has to do something brave. They make her feel like a superhero. It’s like she’s channeling her inner Wonder Woman to boldly face the task at hand. Plus they’re cute, which is a definite perk.
