Greetings! I’m writing this while Marcia is packing her stuff to go to Pierre with me in the morning. Session starts Tuesday, Jan. 11. The leadership meeting is at 10 a.m., caucus at 11 a.m., gavel in at noon, State of the State address at 1 p.m.  

Draft Bill 50 is an official bill

This week I am happy to announce that Draft Bill 50 is officially HB 1039! This is an exciting time for our ranchers and our state. As the momentum, and enthusiasm for this bill continues to grow, we are receiving resolutions of support from commissioners from multiple counties and coverage from local media and regional news outlets such as News Center 1 and Tri-State Livestock News.

Making goals for the new year

As I ponder the new year, a quote from “Anne of Green Gables” by L.M. Montgomery comes to mind. “Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” 
It seems oddly appropriate since that’s what the turning of the year often is—the start of a new day without mistakes. Goals are quickly set. People vow to eat healthier, exercise more and achieve various feats. Resolve is strong as the clock switches from day 365 to day one. In many ways, it feels like anything can be accomplished. 

Time for this year’s session to begin

Greetings! Holy cow! This is my last writing before the 97th Legislative Session begins. Yep, Session starts Jan. 11. Man, now I have to remember to write 2022 instead of 2021.  Our session this year goes 38 days. Our last day is March 10. We come home and then head back for what we call Veto Day which is on March 28. All bills have to be introduced by Feb. 2.
Speaking of bills, let’s run through the procedure of how a bill becomes law.  Basically, there are 8 steps to how a bill becomes law.

I hope you all were able to enjoy some good relaxing family time over the Christmas and New Year holidays. It was a difficult time for our family no longer having our father with us. My thoughts and prayers are for all who have lost loved ones, but we are grateful for the memories.

Tackling workforce housing issues

I’m writing this Christmas Day as, once lion season starts at 6:55 tomorrow morning, writing will be the last thing on my mind. I’m hunting the next three days with Lee Qualm, the previous House Majority Leader. I’ll let you know how we did.

Well, here we are just days away from ushering in 2022...where did 2021 go?
As I look back over the last 12 months, it has been a year of learning and growth. I have met so many amazing people across South Dakota and the United States, gaining knowledge from them along the way. As part of that learning experience, I have had the opportunity to champion and support bills that were important to those living in District 30.

So I just got done hiking to the Harney lookout on Black Elk Peak. On my drive to Custer State Park I could see it off in the distance, toward my left as I passed the KOA. And now I’m driving back on Hwy. 16 and I can also see it off in the distance, on my right.

Before wishing you Happy New Year, Marcia and I hope you all have a Merry Christmas cherishing Jesus’ birth with family and friends. We will have a great time while celebrating Christ’s birth; two family parties East Eiver and two West river. Our grandkids are a real joy and each year are more adorable than the last. We love being grandparents!

One of my favorite things about Christmas is the gift-giving. It's almost a game at my house. We spend hours scheming and planning what to get each other. Because if we pick a present that corresponds with both personality and desires, we'll get a perfect response. The look of joy and sounds of laughter that follow are worth every penny spent. What's more, it means the gift was given and received with love.
