Prevailer earn awards at contest

Opinion pieces, news writing and special section were among the categories the Hill City Prevailer News was honored for at the most recent gathering of the South Dakota NewsMedia Association (SDNA).
The Hill City Prevailer News received six awards all told last Friday, April 26, as part of the Better News Media contest, one event at the 141st annual SDNA convention. The Prevailer was entered in the category for all weekly newspapers with a circulation under 1,300.

Concerns brings new poll workers

Voters in Keystone will notice new poll workers at the redo election April 30. This came as a result of accusations at the April 17 meeting of the Keystone Town Board of Trustees in which a handful of residents voiced concern over improprieties.
Those accusations came from Trinity Rapp and Tammy Hunsaker after trustee Nikki Ball talked about election conduct, including placement of candidate signs. 
Ball has worked numerous elections in the past.

CCC museum wins 2024 Governor’s Awards for History

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum of South Dakota at the Hill City Visitor Information Center (VIC) received the 2024 Governor’s Awards for History from the South Dakota Historical Society. 
Every year the historical society gives an award to a nonprofit and a for-profit organization “who exhibit meritorious endeavors in the field of history in South Dakota,” according to the website. 

Pillar Project awarded to Custer and Keystone residents

The Pillar Project is what Stevie Cummins described as “a very exclusive award for simply spectacular people.”
Cummins, owner of Jewel of the West (JOTW), started the Pillar Project as a way to pay forward the kindness that was shown to her. 
She said, “I was really blessed by some very nice people when I was a single mom, and I always wanted to do something to give back someday when I could to people who maybe have some tough circumstances, but no one knows it because they just rise up and do what it takes to live a happy life and to help others.” 

Park plan approved, paving way for funding options

The Keystone  Board of Trustees approved the park master plan at its April 17 meeting. The approval opens the doors for the town’s park board to begin looking at options for funding park projects including grants and fundraising. Jake Rapp, who heads the park board, was concerned the park plan would end up at the “bottom of list” if not approved. Those items, he says, “rarely get funding.”

Mistake means new election for Keystone

The Town of Keystone will hold a new election for town trustee. The decision came as a result of a special meeting held April 11 at which the town board voted to have attorney Sara Frankenstein file a  declaratory judgment action.
The case itself is a result of an error made by Keystone finance officer Samantha Epler.  Epler cut and pasted last year’s ballots which said “vote for two” despite only one seat being available by vote. That ballot was published in the newspaper and used on election day.

Snow removal amendment approved

For the final time, the ordinance amending Title Seven: Traffic and Streets; Chapter 7.22 Snow Removal and Maintenance of Sidewalks and Chapter 7.24 City to Remove; Costs went before the Hill City Common Council for approval at the meeting April 8. 
When last discussed, the council tabled the amendment to add an exhibit defining which streets would be affected. 
The amendment previously read, “It shall be unlawful to deposit snow or ice onto residential streets within the city limits.” 

Roofing contract awarded to Black Hills Roofing

The Hill City School District Board of Education (HCSB) awarded its roofing project contract to Black HIlls Roofing. The $883,424 expenditure was approved at the April 8 HCSB meeting. The bid covers roofing the middle school and the high school. Minus the deductible, it is all covered under insurance.
The roof suffered severe hail damage in a storm and the board wants to replace the roof during the summer season. A representative from Black Hills Roofing, Chad Meissner, said the company can start on or near the date the district had presented in the bid specs.

Neiman announces more layoffs

Neiman Enterprises announced last week layoffs and production reductions at its last remaining South Dakota facility, Spearfish Forest Products (SFP). The layoffs are the direct result of reductions to the Black Hills National Forest timber-sale program.

Goodwin is District 30 House candidate

Former House Majority Whip Tim Goodwin has announced his candidacy for District 30 House of Representatives.
Goodwin served in the state House from 2016-22. The committees he served on included Taxation and Transportation (two years), State Affairs (four years), Ag and Natural Resources (four years) and Military Affairs (four years). He also served as a Majority Whip for four years. Other assignments include serving on summer study committees about property taxes, hemp, recreational and medicinal marijuana and workforce housing.
