Sunset Creek Phase II sewer line repairs nearing completion

Over the past several months sewer main repairs have been conducted on the Phase II portion of Sunset Creek per the settlement agreement between the City of Hill City, Black Hills Traditions (BHT) and Highmark, Inc. 
Approval of these repairs was requested at the Hill City Common Council meeting June 24. 

Hill City Flower Show July 27

In just a few weeks the public will enjoy the whimsy and wonder of the annual Hill City Flower Show Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
“Hill City Evergreen Garden Club (HCEGC) has been sponsoring this flower show since the 1970s for the purpose of showing the community the beautiful flowers that grow in this area as well as supporting the local Boys & Girls Club with our donations,” said Lori Enders, who is the HCEGC co-vice president along with Mary Braley. 

Funding specialist discusses park plan

The Keystone Park Board heard from its consultant Kristin Thompson at its June 25 meeting. Thompson, a funding specialist with Interstate Engineering, gave an overview of steps the park board may want to take next. 

Highmark Inc. disputes invoice from city

Mistakes happen to everyone. But when a mistake costs over $7,000, who is responsible for footing the bill? 
This question was debated at the Hill City Common Council meeting June 24. 
As part of the settlement agreement surrounding the Sunset Creek Development, Highmark, Inc. was hired by Black Hills Traditions to replace the sewer lines in Phase II. The City of Hill City was not supposed to pay for any repairs to the sewers but rather inspect the work before city acceptance. 

Experience Hill City this Independence Day

Visitors and locals alike can experience Hill City this Independence Day with a full lineup of events. This year, rather than celebrating on a Saturday, the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce decided to start the fun Thursday, July 4 with events running through Sunday, July 7.
“The week of July 4 is historically the busiest week for U.S. vacation travel each day. We wanted to offer our visitors and local area residents the chance to explore and experience Hill City all weekend long,” said chamber executive director Janet Wetovick-Bily. 

Court silences copter arguments, upholds ban

Hill City Ambassador Program coming soon

How often do you talk to tourists, answer questions and point them in the right direction for their next adventure? 
Now through the Hill City Ambassador Program (HCAP) a group of volunteers will be on the streets of Hill City to do just that. 
This program was spearheaded by alderwoman Lori Miner. 

Second street alley plans still on hold in Keystone

The 2nd  Street alley was again discussed at the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting, and once again the board tabled the matter for referral to engineers. 
Attorney Mitch Johnson wrote a memo to the board regarding the alley. He wasn’t quite clear on the city’s overall maintenance of the road nor any express dedication of the roadway, according to what he stated at the June 19 town board  meeting.
Johnson referred to a document from 1975 saying that  the alley from the lot to the south “ends right at your (the senior center) property line.”

Poll: Majority of South Dakotans want new system for primary elections

South Dakotans by a wide margin support a constitutional amendment that would change the way the state conducts primary elections, according to a scientific poll of 500 registered voters co-sponsored by South Dakota News Watch.
The statewide survey, also sponsored by the Chiesman Center for Democracy at the University of South Dakota, showed that 55 percent of respondents favored the plan to change the state’s election format, with 33 percent opposed and 12 percent undecided.

Temporary signal not so temporary

]Commuters to Rapid City have noticed another slowdown on their route: a traffic light at the Moon Meadows Highway 16 intersection. This light is considered “temporary” by South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) standards. 
But that term is a bit misleading.
