58th Annual Governor’s Buffalo Roundup is Friday

An estimated 20,000 to 25,000 people are expected to gather and watch the stampede of 1,300 buffalo at Custer State Park’s 58th annual Buffalo Roundup this Friday, September 29. 
The roundup starts at about 9:30 a.m., but does depend on the cooperation of the bison. Viewers who wish to pick their preferred viewing spot are advised to arrive early with gates to viewing areas opening at 6:15 a.m. Handicap parking is available and golf carts are available to assist people to the viewing area should they need it.

Doaty resigns from city council

The City of Hill City is again without a mayor and also down an alderman as Ward 1 alderman Carl Doaty resigned after Monday’s Hill City Common Council (HCCC) meeting.
Doaty said he resigned as a need to reduce stress, give him room to breathe and preserve his mental and physical health. 
“I did what was best for me, my health and my family,” he said.
He described many sleepless nights where he was having difficulty striving to find “balance” between trying to solve city problems and having an unwilling board.

Doaty proposes $3.5 million bond for water tower

After a discussion about water rates at the Aug. 28 Hill City Common Council meeting, the council decided to further discuss the bulk water rate and the capital improvement funds at the Sept. 11 meeting. 
To recap, alderwoman Lori Miner said at the last meeting the suggestion from city administrator Brett McMacken was that the water and sewer rates themselves were meeting needs and covering costs. Rather, it was the improvement fees, specifically the sewer improvement fee, that might need to be increased. 

District ranked in top five in state

“We’re so lucky with the new staff that we have,” said Hill City School District superintendent Blake Gardner, who had the new teachers introduce themselves to the Hill City school board at its Sept. 11 meeting.
Gardner   the high school came in fifth place in the U.S. News & World Report State of South Dakota rankings noting,  “I think we’re all kinda bummed” since the district is used to being in the top one or twi.
“We’re happy to be recognized by them,” Gardner said, noting the school is still in the upper echelon. 

Desire to bring Meals on Wheels to Hill City

Is there an interest in Meals on Wheels in Hill City? Would the senior citizen population participate in congregant dining if it was available? Are there volunteers willing to make it possible?
These questions were posed at a recent meeting of the Hill City Food Pantry. 
“About a year before covid, Susan and I worked diligently to get Meals on Wheels back into Hill City,” Dale Householder said.l 

Meetings offer Ranger Square info

Two public meetings to learn more about the Ranger Square project take place Sept. 27 and Oct. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hill City Center. It is an opportunity to hear from Ranger Square volunteers, to learn how the project will benefit the community and to answer questions the public might have about the project.

Businesses asked to pitch in to ‘Freedom Works Here’ campaign

Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration reached out to economic development groups and major employers across South Dakota last month, asking them to help extend a run of national TV commercials touting her “Freedom Works Here” workforce recruitment campaign.
By contributing $10,000, they were told, they would receive perks such as callouts on the “Freedom Works Here” website and social media channels, detailed market research data and two invitations to the Governor’s Pheasant Hunt.

Schlumpberger speaks on exploration for lithium mining near Hill City

“As most of you are probably well aware, Hill City and this area was one of the last lithium producing districts within the United States,” said Michael Schlumpberger, chief operating officer of Midwest Lithium, who spoke to the Hill City Common Council about the exploration for lithium mining near Hill City Sept. 11. 
“Understand at that time lithium was glass, ceramics, medicine and lubricants. Certainly today, lithium is much more than that. So that’s what has sparked part of the interest in this,” Schlumpberger said. 

Plein Air Paint Out begins Sept. 21

The Hill City Arts Council (HCAC) Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out begins Sept. 21 with registered artists checking in at Old World Plaza before beginning their painting for the day.
The public is invited to a sponsor and artists reception at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Jon Crane Gallery. This allows attendees a chance to buy an artists’ freshest work, often referred to as a “wet sale.”
It is also an opportunity to vote for your favorite piece and artist in the people’s and artists’ choice award.

It’s time to charge up with BOLT

School is now in session and with that season of the year comes the start of BOLT, an after-school, Bible-based program for children from kindergarten age to fifth grade. The first club is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 3:15 - 5:20 p.m. at the Little White Church and will run throughout the school year.
