Rally off to a slow start

The roar of thunder rolled in for the 83rd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in more ways than one this year. For with the bikers came an abundance of rain and cooler temperatures. 
Per the Hill City Climate Station records, 2022 rally temperatures ranged from 97 to 77 degrees, dropping as low as 67 the day it rained 0.4 inches. All told, there was 0.52 inches of rain during the rally.

Although the crime rate is not necessarily higher during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Pennington County Sheriff Brian Mueller said the extra traffic in communities is very challenging. Especially since many communities within Pennington County serve as day-ride areas for the people who come for the rally. 

Council discusses vacancy of mayor

With the position of mayor currently sitting vacant, many people are wondering what the Hill City Common Council will do next. Originally, three options were presented: the council president can serve in the position as long as practicable, a special election can be held or the council can appoint someone to the position. 
However, the council recently found out that a special election cannot be held without an ordinance in place. The next general election is in June 2024.

Plan shows needs for updated pedestrian crossings

The Hill City Master Transportation Plan Study is near completion it was learned at a meeting held July 25.
Cole Hansen, the intern who completed the study, gave a summary of  the current recommendations, saying some may change but most would not.
Hansen used field data collection, historical data and public meeting and survey results to conduct the research. The final report will be published at the end of summer.

Mining activity to begin near Keystone

Lithium exploration in Keystone  is now underway. While Midwest Lithium  CEO Michael  Schlumpberger calls the process “exploratory,” the company has plans to move to the drilling phase.
“This was an operating mine for decades,” said Schlumpberger of the Ingersoll Mine site on Old Hill City Road, one of two sites Midwest Lithium will be “exploring.”
“People have driven by this mine for decades and decades and decades and they don’t know that it’s there. It blends in,” Schlumpberger said.

Rossknecht gets funding for needed projects

Two initiatives poised to assist Hill City residents recently made their way through Pennington County thanks to county commissioner Ron Rossknecht.
Rossknecht has been trying to assist the Hill City Ambulance since he first learned about its need to have a facility separate from the Fire Department.

Hill City, Keystone gearing up for the rally

Everyone is revving up for the 83rd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally taking place Aug. 4-13. This year there is a brand new event, two breakfasts and a raffle for the Hill City Ambulance. 
The Rally Rev Up is a weeklong event hosted by Diamond Spur Events Center. The festivities kick off Friday, Aug. 4 and run through Saturday, Aug. 12. The venue is however closed Aug. 7 for a private event. 
Each day between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. there will be a variety of live music, food trucks and vendors. 

Funds earmarked for Sunset Creek

The funds totaling $500,000 from the Sunset Creek Settlement were received by the City of Hill City. Finance officer Stacia Tallon then looked to the Hill City Common Council at the July 24 meeting for instruction on how to allocate the funds.
The terms of the settlement agreement left the decision of what to do with the funds up to the council’s discretion. While the council had previously discussed earmarking the funds for Sunset Creek, an official decision was yet to be made.

Clothing closet taking donations

Love INC of Hill City-Keystone has its very own location at the Community Lutheran Church in Hill City says Natalie Cutler, Interim Director for the  Love INC Ministry in Hill City. Cutler has a small office that she will staff Mondays 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Lutheran Church. There will be a Love INC sign in the window. The phone is available anytime for people to leave a voicemail at 605-574-1023.

Trickling money won’t stop city’s water issues

Are water rates in Hill City too low? Some have asked the question, especially in light of the recent water reservoir project that is currently unfunded, leaving some to wonder, with low rates, does Hill City miss out on grant opportunities other towns can apply for?
Rates in Hill City are a combined $20.80 per month for a 1,000 gallon minimum and each 1,000 gallons thereafter.
