Two holiday events are a go

Victorian Christmas and Turkey Bingo are a go this year, according to the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting.

Although planners expect fewer attendees, the board voted to purchase turkeys and hams from Krull’s for the Nov. 21 event.

“We don’t think we’re going to have the number of people we normally have,” said board president Lynette Gohsman.

The board voted to order four turkeys and four hams and expects to have a shorter event than in previous years. No discussion took place with regard to Victorian Christmas other than the date of the event.

Summer season turns into shoulder season

The busy summer tourism season has changed into the shoulder season — the term used for the time between the slow of winter and the busy summer.

Many businesses are prepping for the season, with Jessica Jacobs, new owner of the Mangy Moose Saloon in Hill City, saying she plans to stay open year-round.

Jacobs took over ownership of the saloon from previous owner Tana Nichols on Sept. 1.

“The summer stayed really busy,” Jacobs said.

STAN sells for record price at auction

STAN, the tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) fossil  found in the Black Hills and which used to be on display at the Black Hills Institute of Geology, has been sold for a record price.

Christie’s Auction House announced on its website that the fossil sold for a record $31.84 million.

Principals honored at meeting

The principals in the Hill City School District were honored at Monday night’s meeting of the Hill City Board of Education.

The two principals — Samantha Weaver of the elementary school and Todd Satter of the middle and high school — were honored by Blake Gardner, district superintendent, as part of National School Principals Month.

“We have two very good ones in the Hill City School District,” Gardner said.

CARES Act helping Keystone

The town of Keystone has approximately $77,500 in COVID-19 Cares Act money allocated to it from the state, according to Cassandra Ott, the town’s finance officer.

That figure is based on the population of the town.

While that money is earmarked for any COVID-19 related town expenses, the money is only available until December. The process for submitting receipts for COVID-19 related expenses is “extremely easy,” according to Ott.

Visitation rose throughout summer

The 2020 summer tourism season is officially in the books.

This year was like no other, and no one could have predicted how the season could have gone in March, said Janet Wetovick-Bily, director of the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Update on Bull Run Subdivision

The Bull Run Subdivision is off to a great start.

If you have not driven up to the Bull Run Subdivision off Top O Hill Court, there are houses going up and the roads are almost completed. Once again this could not be a reality without Mr. Jim Scull and his devotion to Hill City.

The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) board had an idea that took years to get started, the belief and support from the entire City of Hill City team and add in the community support made everything a reality.

Council passes transient merchant first reading

The Hill City Common Council unanimously passed the first reading of the transient merchant revision put forth by the Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission.

The move came at Monday’s common council meeting.

“Transient merchants in temporary structures have been an issue with brick and mortar businesses in Hill City since 1995,” said Dani Schade, development service coordinator for Hill City.

Thousands gather for Roundup

The 55th annual Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park held Sept. 25 can easily be listed as a successful event.

Those gathered in the buffalo corrals at the park saw a herd of 1,450 bison herded into corrals to be vaccinated and have their general health checked.

Town gets flood grant

Keystone has received a pre-disaster mitigation grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

According to town documents, the grant is “for completing an engineering study of the City of Keystone within Battle and Grizzly Bear Creeks.”

Town Finance Officer Cassandra Ott explains that, “what they’re going to be doing is they have Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) data that can tell elevations fairly accurately but it gets a little mixed up when it comes to vegetation.”
