The Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission voted to send its revised sign ordinance to the Hill City Common Council during the commission’s meeting Monday.
The vote passed unanimously 5-0 and the council will discuss the revisions at its regular meeting Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
“This has been a methodical process and I want to applaud the staff for their work,” said Rollie Noem, a member of the commission.
Those familiar with the Oreville interchange will notice a new sign directing drivers to Keystone.
“Keystone turn right at next signal” adorns a new sign on the right side of the road as drivers turn onto state Hwy. 244 east from Hwy. 16 north. There is a similar sign for southbound Highway 16 motorists, as well.
The idea for the sign came from Keystone resident Ray French and town trustee Sandi McLain.
Phase one of the Hill City sidewalk project — the second overall phase worked on — has been completed.
Crews will now shift their attention towards creating a bump out on the west side of the street across Main Street from the bump out constructed during the first phase of the project (phase four).
“All that remains for phase one (as of Monday morning) is to grade the sidewalks,” said Dave Buck of Complete Concrete, the firm responsible for work on the sidewalks.
The future of the Keystone Chamber of Commerce is up in the air according to a special joint meeting of the Keystone Town Board, the public and the chamber board held Oct. 22.
The meeting’s minutes reflect, “The chamber general membership meeting on Nov. 7 will discuss the dissolving of the chamber.”
The calendar might say “fall,” but the weather as of late screams “winter.”
The National Weather Service, looking towards winter, has released a winter safety guide. One area of focus in the safety guide is what to have in a car during the winter.
One person died early Saturday morning in a one-vehicle crash west of Keystone, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said in a release. The man was identified as Troy Thorson, 49, of Keystone.
According to the release, Thorson was driving a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and was not wearing a seatbelt. Thorson was westbound on Old Hill City Road when he lost control of the vehicle near Lafferty Gulch Road.
Because of the Native American Day holiday, the Hill City Common Council met Oct. 15.
At its last meeting, the council did not approve the wages for Hill City Planning and Zoning commissioner Connie Wolters (the vote ended in a 2-2 tie with aldermen Bill Miner and Steve Jarvis voting for approval and aldermen John Johnson and Jim Peterson voting against approval).
With the onset of more favorable weather, crews working on the Hill City sidewalks hope to make up for some lost time.
At the weekly sidewalk meeting on Monday, crews and city officials delved into the next part of the project now that the concrete on the lower portion of the sidewalk in phase one has been poured.
“Everything is looking good,” said Brett McMacken, city administrator for Hill City.
The Keystone Chamber of Commerce may sit down with thePennington County Sheriff’s Office concerning the findings of the agreed upon procedures (AUP) conducted by Casey Peterson.
A discussion as to whose responsibility it is to notify law enforcement took place at the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting.
An early-season winter storm dropped a foot of snow on Hill City, according to the National Weather Service.
On Sunday, a winter storm brought snow to the Black Hills, which was heavy in areas, according to the weather service, with a mixture of rain and snow in the foothills area.
Travel became difficult in portions of the northern Black Hills. The storm also produced strong winds, with gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour in areas, the weather service said.
