Lee Stokes, 71, of Custer, S.D., passed away April 24, 2025, at his home in Custer.
Lee was born in Igloo, S.D., to Hermit Stokes and Opal “Dolly” Bettelyoun. He grew up with a spirit of curiosity and a pride in his Southern and Lakota heritage that shaped the rest of his life.
Lee lived a simple life focused on the wellbeing of family and friends. He touched countless lives through his generosity, wit, depth of knowledge and his quiet strength.

Kenneth Redden

Kenneth Buell Redden was born Dec. 5, 1932, in Lindsay, S.D., to Everett and Arleta (Mackey) Redden in a small farmhouse of his grandparents. 
Ken was the eldest of 10 children.  He attended school at the Kirley School in rural Stanley County, S.D., through the eighth grade.
Ken worked for several neighboring farmers from the age of 13 until he entered the Army at the age of 18. He was stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo., and then onto Germany where he worked as a mechanic.

Richard C. Smith, 82, passed away April 16, 2025, at Fort VA Medical Center. A drive-thru graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Hill City Cemetery.

Sandra Marie Boggs  was born Nov. 30, 1943, to Amos and Grace Simants. She married her lifelong partner and best friend Billy Boggs  Nov. 20, 1962.

Gerald Hale

Gerald D. Hale was born Jan.  28, 1940. Gerald, 85, of Custer, S.D., passed away April 9, 2025.   
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Hale of Custer; and his son, John Hale of Phoenix, Ariz. Per Gerald’s wishes, no services will be held.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.

Karen Goodrich

Karen Goodrich, 86, met the goal of her faith when she went home to be with her Savior on March 25, 2025, at her family’s home in Rapid City, S.D. She was surrounded by family as the Lord peacefully called her home.
Karen was born March 27, 1938, to Robert and Leona Blackburn. She grew up in Montague, Mich., where she met her husband of 58 years, Jim. Together they raised four children and enjoyed all that life had to offer until his death in 2013.

Gregory Brose

Gregory Ryan Brose passed away peacefully from the effects of an unexpected cardiac arrest March 23, 2025, at Monument Hospital in Rapid City, S.D., surrounded by his loving family. He was 48 years young.
Greg was born Oct. 13, 1976, in Wilmington, Ohio, to Marvin “Greg” and Peggy (Cloud) Brose. In 1987 his family moved to Mississippi. He attended Tishomingo County High School in Iuka, Miss.

Lois McVey

Lois Rose McVey, 91, of Hill City, died Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Friends and family are invited to a vigil service at St. Rose of Lima Church at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2025.  A Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 11 at the church. Phil Geenen

Phil Geenen was born in October 1945, in Chicago, Ill., to George and Frances (Wnukowski) Geenen. He graduated from Fenger High School in 1963 and attended Chicago State University on the southeast side of Chicago. He received his bachelor’s degree in college for Biology and Education.
Phil met the love of his life at an A&W Root Beer stand in Blue Island, Ill. He pulled up in his 1964 GTO and a 57-year romance began.

Ella Goldammer

Ella Edith Goldammer was born Nov. 29, 1928, in Mitchell, S.D.  Her parents were Frank and Gertie (Hillerns) Gocken.  She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell.  She received her education in Mitchell area schools.
