12:14 a.m.: Deputies checked on two people walking by the side of Hwy. 385 just south of Custer. The deputies eventually gave the pair a ride to a nearby gas station to fill up fuel cans and then back to their residence on Aviation Way.
New efforts to better align school curricula and classroom teaching with the unique needs of Native American students are among the reasons for new hope that South Dakota may be turning a corner toward improving educational achievement for the state’s largest minority group.
After 40 years of working for the U.S. Postal Service, Larry Stalder is looking forward to spending more time with his family this Christmas. Stalder, who has been Custer’s postmaster since 1988, is retiring at the beginning of December.
“I’ve been so busy for 40 years,” said Stalder on Friday as he sat in his office adjoining the post office lobby. “I haven’t spent a real Christmas with my family for 40 years, so this year I will get a chance to do that.”
The Hill City School District’s Angel Fund helps students with negative account balances in the cafeteria and provides meals to students regardless of their food service balance.
The program began in 2013 when Roxann Du Bois started at the school and she was instructed if a student has a negative balance on their lunch the student’s lunch would be discarded.
Artist Deeda Cordin comes from the picturesque land of New Mexico. Now settled in Custer, Cordin discovered the community because of an auto problem in 1991.
“A flat tire in Rapid City on a Friday morning while traveling to Dubois, Wyo., caused me to spend three days exploring the Black Hills, in particular, Custer and Custer State Park,” she said. “I fell in love with the area and returned three or four times a year.”
Cordin is exhibiting her paintings at the Custer County Courthouse Art Gallery through Jan. 28.
Select-A-Gift was launched in Custer last weekend with a benefit concert at The Custer Beacon. Now the trees are up and filled with tags at participating Custer churches, banks/credit unions and businesses. Community members are encouraged to take a gift tag from one of these trees and buy a gift for the person on the tag.
