Schreier is distinguished alumna

Recently retired Mount Rushmore National Memorial superintendent and Custer resident Cheryl Schreier was honored by her alma mater as a distinguished alumna for 2019. In October, Schreier traveled to the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point to receive the award during the school’s 125th anniversary celebration held during homecoming week.

­­10 years ago, 2009 — The S.D. Florist’s Association, led by Doug Hesnard of Hermosa, was invited to decorate the Christmas tree at the state capitol. It was a 38-foot Black Hills spruce from Camp Rapid ... Saying it was needed to cover costs, Mutch Usera, director of energy services and external affairs for Black Hills Power (BHP), laid out BHP’s plan to request a 26.6 percent rate increase from the S.D. Utilities Commis-sion at a Custer city council meeting ... The 44th annual Custer State Park buffalo auction saw $173,690 come in, more than the previous year’s $149,000.

Saturday, Nov. 9
10:40 a.m.: Large trucks were reportedly blocking the north Fairburn Road. A deputy got there just as the trucks were leaving the area. The trucks were apparently part of a railroad crew working on the line there. 
12:41 p.m.: A deputy helped a stranded motorist with car troubles on Hwy. 385 just south of Custer. 
1:33 p.m.: A deputy dealt with a non-violent domestic dispute at a West Custer business. Those involved went their separate ways. 

Native Americans left behind in state education system

The South Dakota constitution demands that state government provide equal opportunity to education for all of its citizens, yet for decades Native Americans – who make up 9 percent of the population – have been left behind by a system that fails to meet their needs and has resulted in generations of Natives suffering the consequences of inadequate educational achievement.

Legion hosts successful chili feed

A total of 48 people showed up to Saturday’s American Legion chili feed, which is an increase over last year, said post commander Alan Case.
 
In addition, a total of $305 was raised for the Legion’s youth education funds.
 
“Everyone seemed pretty happy,” Case said. “Nothing but good comments from everyone.”
 
This year’s chili feed had five different types of chili — along with cornbread and chili fixings — for people to enjoy.
 

Trees and trains returns

Trees and Trains, a Hill City Christmas staple, is returning again this year.

The event kicks off Nov. 29 with free admission after the Hill City Olde Tyme Christmas Parade.

The exhibit, held at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum in Hill City, will be open Nov. 30, Dec. 6-8, Dec. 12, Dec. 14-15 Dec. 21-24 and Dec. 27-28.

Food pantry helps serve those in need

Inside the Little White Church in Hill City sits a blessing for many families: the Hill City Food Pantry.

The pantry is run not just by the Little White Church but also the Lighthouse Assembly of God, Community Lutheran Church and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

“Sixty percent of the items here are from Feeding South Dakota,” said Dale Householder, who helps run the food pantry.

Hill City Reads for the Record

Thirty-three adults and 25 kids participated in the Hill City Library’s Read for the Record events held Nov. 7.

Read for the Record is a movement where thousands of libraries and schools from across the country read the same book to as many people as possible on the same day.

This year’s book was “Thank You, Omu!” by Oge Mora.

­­10 years ago, 2009 — With a 4-1 vote, the Custer City Council once again voted to close the municipal liquor store ... Custer State Park expected higher prices than the previous year for the annual buffalo auction ... The S.D. Public Utilities Commis-sion was to hold a public input meeting to hear comments about the electric rate increase proposed by Black Hills Power. 

Taking Flight

On Oct. 12, Virgil Kock of Custer had a very long day. However, it’s one for the Vietnam veteran that was long overdue, and one he would gladly relive.
On that day Virgil became the second Custer veteran in as many years to embark on the Midwest Honor Flight, which transports America’s veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials that honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their veteran friends. Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization created to honor America’s veterans for their sacrifices.
