C.W. Najacht latest in long line of publishers

Current Custer County Chronicle publisher Charley Najacht follows a long line of Chronicle newspaper owners dating back to its very first, Joseph Kubler, whose story is told elsewhere in this edition.
Kubler was born in Alsace, Germany, and found his way to America via Jackson, Miss., and Denver, Colo. He hitched a ride to Custer in 1876 and ultimately ended up starting the Custer Chronicle as its first editor and owner Sept. 11, 1880.

The Custer County Chronicle has survived competition from at least 12 (in 1980) newspapers in its lengthy career, to say nothing of fires, floods, droughts, the Depression of the 1930s, the 1929 stock market crash and other economic ups and downs.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — Clifford and Christine Mumm purchased the Kleemann House and planned to renovate it ... The renovation and addition to Custer County Courthouse was progressing nicely, according to Custer County planning director David Green ...  Custer City  passed a $5.56 million budget.

Wednesday, Aug. 12
12:09 a.m.: Internet-based extortion went down in the Hermosa area. The incident is under investigation. 
12:43 a.m.: Deputies dealt with juvenile and family issues in Custer County. Everyone was counseled to give each other some room and calm down. 

Quilt show is Sept. 12 and 13

The Hill City Quilt Show is coming up.

The two-day event will start on Sept. 12 and will end on Sept. 13. Each day, the show will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the gyms in the Hill City Middle School.

“We’ll also have quilts along Main Street,” said Mackenzie Swanson, executive director of the Hill City Arts Council. “We’re excited about that. We’re excited to have the businesses participating. It will be a good way to bring our community together.”

The Library will be closed Sept. 5, 6, and 7 to observe Labor Day.

The Friends of the Library will meet Sept. 9 at 10:15 a.m. in the third floor conference room of the Hill City Super 8. Jamie Duprey will be the special guest presenting her book “The Yellow Sports Bra.”

Senior Center gets sprinklers

An historic downtown Custer structure is safer today, thanks to the recent installation of a fire suppression sprinkler system which is the culmination of years of fundraising and planning. The building receiving the nearly $40,000 safety upgrade is the Custer Senior Center and center director Jill Kettle says she is happy to have the project completed.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — The city liquor store building was going to be a liquor store after the city council approved a proposal from Bobbie Alexander in which she would pay the city $1,000 a month for a 15-month lease of its off-sale liquor operation and another $500 a month for a 15-month lease of the building ... Custer County issued a fire burn ban, including burn barrels ... Three fires that burned in Custer County over the weekend were caused by a lightning storm that moved through the area: the Lakota Point Fire, Flynn Creek Fire and South Fork Divide Fire.
