Learn CPR here in the Heart of the Hills

A CPR/AED class is being offered to both city employees and city business owners and their employees May 10. Carl Doaty is offering the class as a means to help people learn how to save lives. 
“With the amount of visitors we get in Hill City, it’s always good to have people who are trained in CPR and the use of AEDs,” said Doaty. He explained that the faster CPR is administered, or an AED used, the greater the chance of survival for an individual undergoing cardiac arrest.

Friends host Pierre to North Pole by bicycle author

Gary W. Wietgrefe, author of “Destination North Pole” will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Library monthly meeting May 10.  The meeting will be held at the Super 8 conference room at 10:15 a.m.
Wietgrefe is a South Dakota author and researcher who has identified the mysterious agent changing culture, predicted how learning will influence the 21st century and traveled from Pierre to North Pole, Alaska, by bicycle at age 65.

Twist comes up in taffy plans

Rushmore Mountain Taffy Shop will not open this season in Hill City as expected. Owner Anita Stverak said although a location has been chosen for the new shop the interior won’t be ready this season.
“We appreciate people asking,” Stverak said about all the inquiries she keeps getting about when the store is set to open. “But due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be ready this season.”

Auction will benefit charities

Bradeen Real Estate and Auctions is celebrating 100 years of doing business in Custer by doing two things it has done all 100 years of operation: conducting an auction and giving back to the community.
This Saturday, April 29, beginning at 11 a.m. Bradeen Auctions will conduct a 100th anniversary celebration and auction, from which 100 percent of the proceeds will be given to charities throughout the Black Hills.

Community grapples with childcare crisis

The Custer School District Board of Education hosted a childcare collaborative last Wednesday, April 19, to identify problems regarding childcare in the community and to make a start at solving those problems. The collaborative was hosted by Kayla Klein, the president of Early Learner South Dakota, who gave a presentation on the state of childcare in the state and in the Custer community. The meeting was attended by several in the childcare and education industry, area business people, elected officials and other community leaders.

Former teacher faces child porn charges

A former Custer Elementary School math and science teacher has been charged with receipt and possession of child pornography.
United States attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced last Friday a federal grand jury indicted Nathan Frisch, 42, in March on charges of Receipt of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate judge Daneta L. Wollmann April 3 and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

Local woman warns of Amazon scam

It seems dishonest people come up with new schemes every day to try to separate folks from their hard-earned money. A case in point is the experience of one local resident who reports she recently took a series of calls and texts from people who were apparently trying to steal her identity. The woman said she received two calls and a text over several days from persons claiming to be from Amazon in what appeared to be a classic “phishing” scam.

Council rejects water reservoir bid

At the Hill City Common Council meeting April 24 the council needed to take some form of action on the water reservoir bid results presented at the last meeting. 
RCS Construction of Rapid City was the only company to bid on the 250,000-gallon water reservoir that would share an easement with the 1880 Train. 
“This project’s important for us because we do have a capacity need here in town for water storage,” said city administrator Brett McMacken. 

SDDOT unveils Hwy. 385 plan

A Hwy. 385 stakeholders meeting on April 21 disclosed the plans for the highway construction project set to take place 2024-27.
The South Dakota Derpartment of Transportation (SDDOT) will reconstruc the highway between the Pennington and Lawrence county lines to the south end of Sheridan Lake/Calumet Road.

Keystone deer ordinance killed

The proposed deer ordinance in  Keystone was killed by Keystone Town Board trustees at the April 19 town board meeting.
The version presented at the town meeting would have prohibited deer feeding in town, subject to a $100 penalty.
Trustee McLain did not agree with the ordinance.
