This is the final installment of a seven-part series exploring the rich history of the Easter sunrise service at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, as the tradition will celebrate its 75th year on April 9.
 
In 1947, the year of the first Easter Sunrise Service to be held on the grounds of Mount Rushmore, Rev. Virgil Selix said, “some day this Sunrise Service at the memorial may be a famous tradition. Wouldn’t it be fine to have been present at its inception?”

The Town of Keystone held a meet the candidates night March 29. The evening was well attended and gave residents an opportunity to get to know the three candidates running for the two open positions.

Two community events approved for June, September

The Hill City Common Council meeting went by quickly March 27 with only two action items on the agenda. 
The first was the approval of Special Event Fine Arts in the Hills Show & Sale. Twila Morris and Connie Wolters spoke on behalf of the Hill City Arts Council on this matter. The show is planned for June 15 to 18. During this time a 40x120 tent will be set up on Elm Street between The Farmer’s Daughter and Jewel of the West. 

A heartwarming Lent giveaway

Sue Anderson and Sheila Grieme first discovered the idea of the Black Bag Giveaway (BBG) online from someone doing it in a different area. According to Anderson they looked at each other and thought, “We need to do this. We need to continue to help others that have so little.” 
For this project, Anderson said “During the 40 days of Lent, instead of giving up something you give away something that someone in need could use.”

Friends of the Hill City Library will meet Wednesday, April 12 at 10:15 AM at the Super 8 conference room. Leslie Silverman, author and award-winning journalist for the Hill City Prevailer, will be discussing her new book “From Badger to Blossom with Love.”

Beef donated to Hill City School District

Hill City School District superintendent Blake Gardner has been wanting to be a part of the Beef to School program since he was first introduced to it three years ago. This desire was fulfilled March 29 when Hill City received two longhorns which amounted to 580 pounds of donated ground beef. 
The beef was donated by Travis Bies, whose family has a ranch in Fairburn and runs cattle near Deerfield Lake. Meanwhile, the longhorns were part of a herd that was started by Travis’ son, Traven.

While saying they are glad the South Dakota Legislature passed the largest tax cut in state history in the recently concluded session, District 30 legislators say they are disappointed the body was unable to agree on statewide property-tax relief again this year.

County hears mining opposition

Like the Custer City Council before it, the Custer County Commission at its March 22 meeting heard a plea from retired attorney Tom Patterson regarding opposition to the F3 LLC exploratory gold mining planned on Black Hills National Forest land. Unlike at the council meeting, however, there was vocal opposition to a proposed resolution and Rob McWhorter presented that would state the county’s opposition to such mining.

‘Team Billy’ helps improve dysregulation

“Team Billy” seems to be showing improvements in the social and emotional regulation of staff and students at the Custer Elementary amd Jr./Sr. High schools and Hermosa school. Team Billy is a group of Custer School District employees including general educators, special educators, paraprofessionals, counselors, a behavioral therapist and administrators.
The name “Team Billy” comes from the book “Help for Billy” by Heather Forbes.
