Cheer team fourth at BHC meet

The Custer High School competitive cheer team placed fourth out of five teams in the cheer portion of the Black Hills Conference Spirit Competition in Sturgis on Thursday. Coach Cece Lubben said she was pleased with that placement in light of the fact that two team members dropped out the day before and the team had less than five hours of practice in which to change the entire routine.
The coach did not state the reason for the absences but noted she was proud of her team for how they handled the quick adjustment. 

Volleyball upsets Rapid City Christian

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team put on a master class and defeated the Rapid City Christian Comets 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 27-25) in a match on Oct. 8.

The Comets had one loss heading into the game and had defeated the Rangers earlier in a tournament; however, the Rangers came out to play that night.

Football team posts second consecutive shutout

What do you do for an encore after a shutout of Bennett County?
If you’re the Custer High School football team, you do the same thing, only this time you do it on homecoming in front of the home fans.
For the second consecutive Friday evening the Wildcat defense was an impenetrable purple and gold wall as the Wildcats thumped the visiting Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers 42-0 last Friday at Wildcat Field.

Fish finishes in top 25 at state

The Custer High School boys golf team wrapped up its season last week in Hot Springs, participating in the Class A State Meet at Southern Hills Golf Course Oct. 5-6.
Dustyn Fish was the top scorer for the team at the meet, shooting 86-83 169. That score was good for a tie for 22nd.
Ryder Bailey finished 49th at the meet, with a total of 93-90 183, while Gunner Prior was 69th at 105-88 193. Matthew Merrill was just behind Prior at 98-96 194. Ethan Lappe was the other Wildcat to participate in the met.

Cheer team forced to scrap performance

The Custer High School competitive cheer team had a stroke of bad luck at its most recent meet, when it had to quit mid-routine at the Douglas meet last Saturday.
Custer head coach Cece Lubben said one of her cheerleaders began to suffer an asthma attack in the middle of the team’s performance, which cause the team to have to drop out of the meet. The team could have restarted its routine, but decided against it since the cheerleader who had the attack couldn’t perform.
Lubben said the cheerleader got her inhaler and recovered and is fine moving forward.

Girls second, boys third at BHC

With a mix of injured runners, runners coming off injury or just plain young, the Custer High School cross country team doesn’t have the hallmark depth that has made it a staple—and frequent winner—at the Class A State Cross Country Meet.
Because of that, cross country coach Karen Karim said both the boys and girls team will be in the unfamiliar position of trying to qualify as a team for the state meet when they participate in the Region 5A cross country meet at Tomahawk Golf Course just south of Deadwood Thursday morning.

Volleyball beats Wall, falls to Christian

The Custer High School volleyball team split a pair of games last week, defeating Wall Eagles in Wall in three sets before falling to Rapid City Christian in the Armory in three sets Monday evening.
The Wildcats were boosted by strong serving at Wall, said head coach Jill Hohn, particularly from sophomore Ally Cass.
“We really got them out of system,” Hohn said. “We played really well as a team and flowed well.”

Course record set

About 700 runners participated in this weekend’s Run Crazy Horse Marathon and Half Marathon events. This is the 10th anniversary of the event, according to race director Emily Wheeler.

The number of participants was dramatically limited this year to insure safety.

“Normally we have about 1,200 runners from 3 different countries. This year we have 46 states represented,” Wheeler said.

Race organizers encouraged social distancing. Organizers did not notice a lack of people wanting to participate.

Football loses final home game of the year

In football, the Hill City Rangers played host to the Rapid City Comets in the Rangers final home game of the 2020 season.

While the final score might have read 66-12 in favor of the Comets, that did not mean the Rangers did not put up a good fight.

Both Jaxon Johnson and Austin Groven had long rushing touchdowns, and head coach Brett Eckert was aggressive with his play calling throughout the game, giving the Rangers a “never say quit” mentality that lasted throughout the game.

Championship season for cross country

The Hill City cross country teams will look to bring home some hardware when championship season begins on Thursday.

On Thursday, the teams will travel to Hot Springs for the Black Hills Conference Cross County Championships.

On Oct. 15, the teams will travel to Deadwood to compete in the South Dakota High School Activities Association  (SDHSAA) Region 5A Cross County Meet.

On Oct. 24, the SDHSAA Class A State Cross County Meet will be run in Rapid City.
