Big volleyball game Thursday

In a battle between the top two teams in Region 8, the Hill City Rangers play host to the Rapid City Christian Comets at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8 in Gins Gym. The Comets are undefeated this season.

The Rangers will be looking to avenge their lone loss of the season, which came at the hands of the Comets in a tournament game Sept. 26. That game went to three sets — the maximum for tournament play. Each of the three sets were close.

The Rangers will then take on Sturgis at home on Oct. 10.

Wildcats win over ’Diggers, Douglas

Four-set wins over Douglas and Lead-Deadwood improved the Custer girls volleyball team’s record to 7-6 over the past week but, as always, the girls struggled to gain momentum early in the matches. 
In their game before the home crowd at the Armory on Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Wildcats had an early lead in the first set but were never more than three points ahead before scoring by Douglas tied up the game at 12-12. After regaining the lead, however, Custer never looked back and kept widening it until the final score of 25-18.

Runners secure varsity spots

Friday’s Sturgis Invitational cross country meet was not a great one for Custer’s teams but it was an important race for individual runners to lock in their spots in the varsity boys and girls races at the Black Hills Conference meet in Hot Springs this week. 

’Cats get back into win column

Playing what head coach Dave Williams called the team’s most complete game of the season, the Custer High School football team got back into the win column last Friday night in Martin, scoring early and often on the way to a 40-0 win over the Bennett County Warriors.
“We played every facet of the game well; as well as we have in years,” Williams said. “It might have been one of our best games in several years as a team.”

Football dominates Newell

It wasn’t close from the beginning.

The Hill City Rangers dominated the Newell Irrigators during the Rangers’ homecoming game on Sept. 25.

A packed house was on hand to witness a prolific Rangers running attack that saw them go up 58-0 at half time, which is when the game was called.

One could argue that the only thing that didn’t go the Rangers’ way was that they did not recover the onside kick at the beginning of the game.

But from that point on it was all Rangers.

Volleyball gets job done versus Newell

Rangers volleyball won their match versus a tenacious Newell High School team in their match on Sept. 24.

The Rangers won the match 3-0, but each set, especially the last set, saw equal play from both sides.

In the first set, the score went back and forth with Hill City down two points at several times during the set. However, the Rangers persisted and came away with the victory in the first set 25-15.

In the second set, Newell went up 3-0 to start out, but the Rangers battled back to tie the game up at 7-7 before going on a 10-2 run to make the score 17-9.

Spartans run over ‘Cats

The Custer girls volleyball team’s record is now at 5-5 after a loss to Class AA school, Spearfish in a game at home last Thursday. The 4-5 Spartans won the match in straight sets, 15-25, 22-25 and 18-25.
In keeping with co-head coach Jill Hohn’s earlier comments about the team having trouble getting its game going early on, the girls struggled to get momentum in set one. The Spartans got off to an early lead and ended up winning by 10 points. 

Cheer team 3rd at Stevens meet

 The Custer competitive cheer team had to sit out its own Custer meet last week due to an injury on the team, but coach Cece Lubben says the girls were able to put that behind them and come out stronger than ever to take third place in a meet at Rapid City Stevens High School on Saturday.
“We had a little bit of a rough patch there but we came together as a team and we’ve been giving 100 percent at practice,” said Lubben. “They gave 110 percent in our performance at Stevens.”

Varsity struggles at Hart Ranch

A number of Custer cross country runners had their best times ever at the Rapid City Invitational at Hart Ranch on Friday. Unfortunately, none of them were among the varsity teams’ top five runners, so team scores for the Wildcats suffered mightily. 
The varsity boys scored a 147 as compared with a 36 for team champion Sioux Falls Christian. The Custer boys had to settle for seventh place. Meanwhile, the girls team didn’t enter enough runners in the race to even qualify for team points. 

’Cats second at region golf meet

Bolstered by three golfers finishing in the top 10, the Custer High School golf team played its way to a second-place finish at the Region 4A golf meet Monday at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.
As has been the case most of the season, senior Dustyn Fish led the charge for the Wildcats, as he played his way to a score of 90, which was good for a third-place finish at the meet. Freshman Ryder Bailey finished in seventh place at 94, while Matt Merrill was eighth at 96.
