’Cats runners-up at Black Hills Classic

Wildcat wrestlers took second place honors at the Black Hills Classic Tournament in Hill City on Saturday losing only to the Class B West River powerhouse Philip Scotties.
In their last outing before the big dance begins at the Region 4B tourney in Rapid City on Feb. 20, the ‛Cats earned 125 team points to Philip’s 197.5.
Tray Weiss, wrestling at 106 pounds, was the only Custer wrestler to win a first place title. Weiss, an eighth grader, scored 24 points for his team and won an 18-4 major decision over Gage Anderson of Lemmon in the match for first.

Boys claw back, beat Bison

A 27-9 run over the last 8:30 of the game and a monster night from Jace Kelley keyed a come-from-behind 57-50 victory for the Custer High School boys basketball team last Friday evening in Hot Springs.
The Wildcats found themselves down 10 in the third quarter to the Bison, but rode a hot hand from Jace Kelley down the stretch, as the senior scored 25 of his 34 points in the second half.
“Sometimes you have to win ugly. It was just one of those nights,” Custer head coach Paul Kelley said. “Hot Springs played their butts off. We had a tough time getting any rhythm.”

Girls make it four straight

The Custer High School girls basketball team won its fourth game in a row last Friday evening in Hot Springs, using a 20-6 fourth quarter advantage to come away with a 58-43 win.
“It was a fun game,” Custer coach Tobey Cass said. “I think Hot Springs has improved a lot as the season has gone on. They are a good team.”
The action was back and forth for most of the game, with Custer leading by four at the end of the first quarter, three at the half and only one at the end of the third quarter.

Revenge on the mind for boys basketball

According to head coach Nate Bayne, the Hill City boys basketball team has revenge on its mind as it takes on Hot Springs High School on Saturday and looks to avenge an overtime loss from earlier in the season.

This past week, the team played three big games, Bayne said.

“We played well Tuesday night and beat Sturgis at home,” he said. “Thursday night we traveled to Wall. Despite a 17 point halftime deficit, we pulled to within six before taking a nine point loss. We took a trip to Kadoka Saturday and played a hotly contested game.”

Girls win third game in a row

From 3-8 to 6-8—the Custer High School girls basketball team is officially on a roll.
The Wildcats won their third consecutive game last Thursday evening in Box Elder when they jumped on Douglas early and cruised to a 58-32 win.
Custer coach Tobey Cass said the girls were a bit tired from their game against Rapid City Christian two days earlier, but found their legs and built a large enough lead to allow younger players to finish the game.
“We did a little bit of platooning,” Cass said.

Wrestlers crush Chadron and Douglas, have strong showing at Belle

Coming off lopsided victories over Chadron, Neb. and Douglas on Thursday, the Custer wrestling team came in third among a dozen teams at the Belle Fourche Invitational last Friday, but finished first among B schools at the tournament.
The Thursday triangular in Chadron was dominated by the Wildcats as they defeated the host team 51-19 and the Douglas Patriots 54-21.
Head coach Jared Webster said he was extremely pleased with his wrestlers’ attack and aggression at the meet.
“Thursday night the kids wrestled awesome,” he said. “I was happy as heck.”

Boys basketball splits games

Rangers boys basketball split a pair of games this week.

On Jan. 21, the Rangers traveled to Lead for a rematch of the previous week’s game that saw the Rangers win by 13 points.

The Rangers built a  nine point lead early and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire for a 20 point win, said head coach Nate Bayne.

On Jan. 22, the Rangers faced the Spearfish Spartans at home. It was a close game early, but the Spartans were able to make a few threes to get some cushion, Bayne said.

Wildcats corral Buffaloes

A 16-point effort from senior Dustyn Fish was the catalyst for the Custer High School boys basketball game last Saturday evening at the Armory as the Wildcats climbed out to a big lead and held on late for a 57-48 win over Stanley County.
Fish’s 16 points came on an efficient five-of-nine- shooting night, including hitting five of his seven three-point attempts.
“I thought Dustyn played his best game of the season for us,” said head coach Paul Kelley. “He took open shots and the kids found him. It’s nice to see him get going a little more offensively.”

Girls start strong, blast Stanley County

In several games this season, the Custer High School girls basketball team got off to exceptionally slow starts, fell behind big and were never able to get back in the game.
The Wildcats turned those tables last Saturday at the Armory.
The Wildcats jumped all over the visiting Stanley County Buffaloes from the opening tip, taking an 11-0 lead and never looking back in a 65-43 win.
