Scouts to have art festival booths

Custer Cub Scouts Pack 25 will hosting two booths at the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival this weekend. The booths will be a portable BB Gun Range and Archery Range as well as a Lego League booth.
Trails End Popcorn will be available. Popcorn sales is the Scouts’ largest fundraiser of the year and helps fund scouting activities, as well as local councils operating costs.

Golf team hosts lone home meet

Ryder Bailey led the Custer High School golf team with a 92 at Monday’s Hot Springs Invitational at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs, but the Wildcats scuffled to a fifth place finish out of five teams at the meet.
The Wildcats finished with a team score of 432, while Stevens won the meet at 356.
Matt Merrill was the second-best scorer for Custer, as he finished at 102. He was followed by Jackson Wiles at 117, Regan Sorenson at 121 and Bohdan Pesicka at 126. Lane Poper also played for Custer, carding a 132.

C-Hawks spoil Wildcat homecoming

According to the State of South Dakota’s Class A football rankings, the Custer High School football team couldn’t have had a more difficult schedule to open its season.
And that’s not hyperbole.
Following last Saturday evening’s 49-6 homecoming loss to Canton at Wildcat Field, the ’Cats have now played the No. 1 (Canton), No. 2 (Madison) and (at the time) No. 3 (Lennox) ranked teams in Class A football.
That three-game gauntlet produced average losses of 41-7, but also loads of experience for a young team finding its way.

Wildcat volleyball team falls to 2-7

Slow starts continue to plague the Custer High School volleyball team which dropped its season win/loss record to 2-7 after three losses at home and on the road last week.
In a homecoming week game at the Armory on Tuesday, the Wildcats hosted an always-tough Sturgis team and lost in straight sets, 25-16, 27-25 and 25-22.

Cross country boys place first at Belle

The Custer High School varsity boys placed four runners in the top 10 to take first place among three teams at the Belle Fourche Cross Country Invite last Thursday. That was in spite of the fact that the weather was “awfully warm and uncomfortable,” as described by coach Karen Karim, who said temperatures at the Belle Fourche Country Club where the meet was held topped 90.
Gage Grohs held on to his team frontrunner status, placing third with a time of 18:32.82.

Cheer team awarded ‘Spirit Stick’

Custer High School’s young competitive cheer team brought home a shiny trophy from their second meet of the season in Spearfish Monday night even though it finished sixth out of six teams in the competition.
The eight girls and one boy on the team were the recipients of the first-ever Spirit Award given by Spearfish High School. They won the traveling “Spirit Stick” by enthusiastically cheering for the other teams in the meet.
Coach Sheri Deatherage said the team was “super excited” by being awarded the trophy.

Rangers fall to Comets

The Hill City High School football team lost its third game of the season and is still looking for its first points of the season, but head coach Brett Eckert said the 36-0 loss suffered by the team last Friday against Rapid City Christian was a good growing experience for the team.
“We definitely progressed from two weeks prior. We got better in a lot of areas,” Eckert said. “We blocked better up front, defensively we pursued the ball better and played more aggressively. With being as young as we are we just strive to get better everyday.”

Volleyball team remains undefeated

The Hill City High School volleyball team continued its winning streak with wins last week over Spearfish and Belle Fourche. The team crushed Belle Fourche Saturday  25- 18, 25-10, 25-12. Earlier in the week the  team defeated Spearfish 25-19, 25-13, 25-14.
Junior Macey Wathen led the team with nine kills during the Belle Fourche victory, while senior Abby Siemonsma had 19 assists. Freshman Sydney Wathen had 19 digs during the match, which leaves the Rangers volleyball team with a 7-0 record for the season. 

Wildcats drop two at home

After two losses at home last week, Custer High School volleyball coach Jill Hohn continues to be optimistic about the progress being made this season by what is essentially a brand new team.
In Tuesday’s game against the Douglas Patriots, the Wildcats got off to a slow and rocky start losing the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18. However, led by top notch serving by Ally Cass, the Wildcats came back to win set three by a score of 25-17.

Football team scores, but falls to 0-2

It was a bit of a good new/bad news situation for the Custer High School football team last Friday evening in Lennox, as the Wildcats scored their first 14 points of the season, but did so late in the game when trailing 36-0 in a 36-14 loss to the Orioles.
Statistically the Wildcats did much better than in their season-opening loss to Madison, as the Wildcats were able to rush for 252 yards and gain 17 first downs while committing only three penalties. However, much of that damage was done when the game had already been decided.
